A Virginia man who once spent eight years on the run from naval investigators was arrested in Somerset County early today with a trove of high-powered weapons, including a grenade-launcher and two assault rifles, along with maps of a U.S. military base and a civilian neighborhood, authorities said.
The federal governments Joint Terrorism Task Force quickly joined the investigation into Lloyd R. Woodson, 43, who had been staying at a Branchburg motel since last week. Woodson, whose last known address was in Reston, Va., was wearing a bullet-proof vest and carrying one of the assault rifles customized to shoot .50-caliber rounds when police arrested him after a chase and a scuffle in a local trailer park.

gee, what a surprise, he is black and they found a mid east head dress scarf in his posessions...
Well-equipped guy. Don’t know of many .50 cal assault rifles, though.
Not A Redneck!
The right to keep and bear arms was intended to include all military arms.
I'm sure we will never know.
“A U.S. Navy spokesman, Lt. Justin Cole, said Woodson joined the service in February 1988 and served aboard the USS Orion, a submarine tender, before deserting in April 1989. It would be eight years before he was returned to Navy custody, Cole said. A month later, in August 1997, Woodson was discharged.”
Another source said he did have a red and white middle eastern head scarf in the hotel room.
Wonder what his other name is.
I read online that the red and white head gear is common in Jordan and Somalia.
???? I would love to know the details of this so called 'customization'. I have a feeling it is more like a from scratch fabrication.
.50 Beowolf upper or a .50 BMG upper?
Gotta have serious recoil if it was a .50 BMG small enough to conceal under anything sort of a burka!
Along with cannons too?
Probably an AR with a .50 Beowulf upper.
Or a Barrett. ;0), which might be an "assault rifle" in the eyes of a NJ newspaper reporter.
I don’t know, sounds like some Texas FReepers I know closet collections.
Well..., it is Jersey, after all....
Must not be a Mensa candidate, of all the places to bring all that hardware...New Jersey! BB guns are illegal here.
Not A Redneck!
Exactly! he was from a secret underground terrorist organization. whats it it called? OH Yea...........Amish!
How did he have anything capable of firing .50 BMG under a vest?
I heard it was Abba Fonghoul.
Yer right. No way could this turd be a allah worshipper
Dont know of many .50 cal assault rifles, though.
Something like this, maybe. (A single shot .50 AR-15 conversion of some sort.)
I’m thinking it was this.......
It is with concern that I read your story Virginia man had weapons cache, grenade launcher stashed in N.J. hotel room at the link
I had a couple of questions for you, based upon the article.
In particular, my curiosity was roused by the following paragraph:
A U.S. Navy spokesman, Lt. Justin Cole, said Woodson joined the service in February 1988 and served aboard the USS Orion, a submarine tender, before deserting in April 1989. It would be eight years before he was returned to Navy custody, Cole said. A month later, in August 1997, Woodson was discharged.
And then there is the following sentence:
Mixed in among Woodsons belongings, the prosecutor said, was a Middle Eastern, red-and-white traditional headdress.
This seems to me to be fairly unusual attire for a Navy man, even in an era when the President bows to the King of Saudi Arabia.
In addition, it seems odd that someone who has deserted from the Navy escaped apprehension for *eight years*.
My questions are as follows:
Is there any information available as to where Woodson was living during the interval after his desertion and before his apprehension and (presumably dishonorable) discharge?
Were any other suspicious items found (or disclosed by the authorities) which might shed light on his state of mind or motivations? (A Koran, given the headdress; or maybe screeds against the military given his discharge following desertion; or even connections to the Weather Underground -- remember several of their members died while constructing a homemade bomb meant to kill people on a military base.)
Did he have a laptop computer or a cell phone? Has a warrant been secured to allow them to be examined ? (Remember Zacarais Moussaoui's laptop prior to 9-11.)
Naaah -- I'm sure he had Glenn Beck's private cell phone and a copy of Sarah Palin's Going Rogue (heavily underlined in highlighter). /sarc>
The heck of it is, I knew about that thing, but didn’t think of it. I was figuring .50 BMG. Trailerpark Badass nailed my line of thinking with his last comment.
If it was a Beowulf, I’m amazed the reporter got it right.
.50 Cal - check
red/white keyfiyah - check
map of US military installation - check
Let the jihad, er, nothing to indicate terrorism, man made disaster, er, Army psychiatrist medical lecture begin.
Good point. A defector to Islamic Jihad?
I’m too old school Jersey to even semi-appreciate something like GTL.... Just sayin’....
In Texas, what this guy had would be called OBEYING THE LAW.
Not only was he wearing body armor when apprehended- they found a second vest in his hotel room.
Well, you know, in MSM-speak, a "weapons cache" is a pocket knife and a nail file. As for the grenade launcher, maybe that neighborhood has a lot of motel-room robberies! ;-)
A second vest.
Noted and thanks piasa.
Wait wait... Can you go jihad without changing to a Muzzie name?
This is depressing.
You don’t have to change your name to Mullahaborackaskyhook Muhammad poopbeuponallah Mohammad before going nuts??
True. but having arab doo rags is dead giveaway.
I guess he thought he was on the A-Team and he pittied the fool who was an infidel
It is common to replace the M4 upper with a .50 Beowulf. It is a lengthened .50AE with the head turned down to fit the .223 bolt. 10 of them will single stack in the standard M4-20 round magazine. They are used against vehicles and will take doors off their hinges.

BRANCHBURG, N.J. -
SNIPPET: “Detectives later searched the room where Woodson had been staying at the Red Mill Inn in Branchburg. Forrest said they seized another Bushmaster .308-caliber semiautomatic rifle with a defaced serial number, a 37 mm Cobray grenade launcher, a second bulletproof vest, a Russian-made night vision scope, a police scanner, the maps and hundreds of rounds of .50-caliber and .308-caliber ammunition.”
SNIPPET: “Forrest said investigators from the FBI (web) and the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives have joined the investigation.”
Re suspect wearing a body armor vest and having a second one in his hotel room.
Was he playing ZZ Top’s “Well Dressed Man” when he was caught?
