Pilsner’s succinctly stated it: it’s still against the law in this context, even if the person’s no longer subject to military regulations.

My Father was an aircraft mechanic that lived in a tent and followed Red Horse outfits into Viet Nam. He carried an M-1 carbine on the metal flight line. From 1963 to 1972 he spent every other year in SE Asia. I have a photo from the NCO Club dated 1962 and of the 12 men with their wives at the table, the only one to live to 1968 was my Father. Above their heads is the date they died in Viet Nam. The mechanics that serviced the B-57s and F-105s were targets for the VC and were in danger every day. I live near a Marine that actually saw my Father almost die after he certified an F-105 at Da Nang. The VC Mortared it as he was leaving the cubicle. My Father was also a Chief for the RB-66 and had to fly with the air crew for one tour. Several times barely got home. He was also the crew chief that destroyed Col Jack Broughton's nose film when he and a couple of Majors returned from strafing and bombing Russian ships at Haiphong Harbor. Dad was at Takli then.

Want to talk efficiency? What is the enemy kill ratio of one USAF versus one USA member? It doesn't matter but I guess someone here thinks that Patton was wrong when he said The object of war is not to die for your country, it is for the enemy to die for his..I could go on with the actions of Red Horse outfits, the Special Forces (Mayaguez incident), FAC, Pararescue, and other USAF members that do exactly as the Army 11B does but with technical skill. Anyone that is not aware of these AFSC (MOS for Army) is just plain ignorant of the military and should STFU.

Outfriggingstanding, amigo. Hell, I think all grunts should come home from anyplace in the world where there is a dustup, and let the airforce handle it with technical skill. I’m all for it. As a matter of fact, that should apply to any future dustups as well.

You precisely summed up the equation with sarcasm. Not one branch can do the job efficiently. Disparaging the USAF or the USA without understanding the entire situation is arrogance and ignorance. Stating that the USAF has no one that has the skills of the 11B is ignorance as well as stating that the job can be done more efficiently by the USAF. The AFSC’s that I described are trained and could function with or as an 11B but have special technical skills to augment the mission of the USAF.

My dad said that the reason he was able to return from every mission was because of God and the men who performed miracles so the F-105 would fly like he needed it to. Your dad has my respect and gratitude, and he has my dad's. Thanks for the comment.

I wasn't aware the Army Special Forces was involved in the Mayaguez mishap, were they?

The USAF had special forces troops. The Mayaguez Incident losses were 26 USAF, 12 USMC, and 4 USN. The USAF kept first response Special Forces troops at USAF bases in Thailand. The official press releases about the Battle of Koh Tang only released the USMC losses.

No the Air Force has special operations troops just as every branch of the military does, the Special Forces are United States Army.
