A national television audience will watch Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell deliver the Republican response to President Barack Obama's State of the Union speech this evening.
Asked about his message Tuesday, McDonnell told reporters he'll "put a happy, positive, pro-business face on the Republican party."
The governor expects to give a 10-minute address from the House of Delegates chamber in the State Capitol.
He said it will be "the shortest speech I've given in a long time," a self-deprecating crack about his penchant to expound at length on numerous topics.
But the governor's comments likely won't be all positive.
McDonnell said he also will express concern about federal government excess.
That national GOP leaders asked McDonnell to deliver the response is a signal the new governor is viewed as an up and comer in the party.
He wasn't far removed from his landslide November victory in the governor's race when the proposition was presented to him in recent weeks, McDonnell revealed Tuesday.
In similar fashion, former Gov. Timothy M. Kaine was just beginning his term in 2006 when he delivered a response to then-President George W. Bush's State of the Commonwealth speech.
Because Obama's speech is to begin at 9 tonight, McDonnell aides expect the governor will speak sometime around 10 p.m.
Should have let Scott Brown (or Sarah Palin) do it
I may just watch that if I know when it starts...
and MSNBC will spend the next three days dissecting and making snide comments for every minute of it
But, so few watch MSNBC that it won’t matter, most times they are talking the a handful from the RAT forums!
Gov. McDonnell just last November (2009) absolutely trounced the outgoing 'Rat governor's handpicked successor in an epic landslide of votes. Creigh Deeds is probably still wandering around in a daze, wondering what happened.
Will I have to watch Obama for McDonnell to make sense? Not sure it’s worth it.
Governor McDonnell is a fine choice.
Although part of me wanted to see Joe Wilson give the response....
I am not going to watch/listen.
No. I certainly won’t subject myself to Usurper Um-bama, but will tune in 7:00-7:30 p.m. Pacific time for McDonnell. (God bless him.)
This should be good. I’ve never seen him speak and gather he’s pretty effective. I may even watch it, for sure I’m not watching Bambi. He’s insufferable and I’d likely throw something at the tv.
That could have been a pay per view event for sure.
McDonnell I believe will do a great job.
Happy it wasn't John McCain.
He would have found nothing wrong with the 0 speech and would have praised him.
I won’t watch either. I’ll let Rush fill me in.
And from Virginia, the birthplace of the Father of Our Nation, General George Washington... hope he mentions him... hint, hint (2nd American Revolution).
Well, I’m all for “happy, positive and pro-business” but he’ll strike more chords across the entire country if he eviscerates Zeroman’s failed policies, call them what they are (socialism) and explain why republicans have a much better plan.
Hopefully this will be the case with the governor and I wish him good luck.
Neither one is an official office holder which they always get to give the rebuttal. Brown won’t be sworn in until Feb and Palin quit as Governor. If you wanted Palin, then she should have stayed Governor.
You mean the " Iam your pretend president and I have been sucessful at dismantling America politcally, economically and socially. OUR UNION IS WEAK!!" Speech
Congress should bag the pretend president in the House chamber, tag him and deport his treasonous a$$ to Kenya.Send that treaonous dick head Holder with him.
I wouldn't listen to Obama if you paid me to.I want to hear his screams as Congress arrests him and deports him for the treasonous, imposter he truly is.Thats ALL I need to hear.
A parasite needs removal.
