Obama says 'yes we can' to immigration reform (Barf bag required)

Barack Obama came out fighting last night in his State of the Union and made it clear that issues such as immigration reform are still very much on his agenda.

It was great to see the Commander in Chief recapture some of the fire and fury that brought him to the White House in the first place. For too long he has seemed a prisoner of the office, tentative, not bold, afraid to shake up the cosy consensus that passes for policy these days.

On immigration reform he was clear that he will pursue what has become one of the most contentious issues of his presidency. For tens of thousands of undocumented Irish his message was good news

He also knows that the huge Hispanic lobby has sat back quietly and allowed him to long finger the legislation but their patience is running out. A recent poll showed that 62 per cent of Hispanics, a key voting block for Obama, have urged him to introduce the immigration reform legislation that he has promised.

"If Obama breaks the one major promise he made to Latino voters -- to deliver comprehensive immigration reform -- this will make it tough for him to face the Latino community as he campaigns for re-election," wrote Rubin Navarette the influential columnist a few days ago. "And Democrats can't afford a sizable bloc of voters becoming so disillusioned with Obama's version of 'hope and change' that they don't turn out to help re-elect him."

Exactly. Obama is also fortunate that he has one of the best political operators around, Senator Chuck Schumer of New York, leading the way on this legislation.

Schumer knows it has to have a bipartisan approach and that he needs to work across the aisle, which he has certainly committed to do.

He also knows average Americans have to feel like there is a correct balance between enforcement and legalization, a carrot-and-stick approach that will find that vital consensus and give the bill widespread support.

Obama has certainly now publicly committed to the Schumer model in the State of the Union. Hopefully legislation will now follow. Last night was a good start.

Obama put down the gauntlet last night. What he won't say is that 'immigration reform' IS amnesty.

There is big money behind this push! SEIU, LaRaza, the DNC, McCain and the Kennedy wing of the GOP. Regarding the article, there are 50,000 illegal alien Irish here...they need to go home with the rest of the squatters.

The bill in the house is CIR/ASAP. One thing it will do is prevent the national guard from ever being deployed along the southern border, no matter what happens in Mexico. And it just gets worse.

The Senate will come up with something equally as offensive IF John McCain is allowed to stay in his seat!

GO J.D. Hayworth!

Obama says a lot of things, doesn’t mean it will happen.

VIDEO: SEIU Official Says Reforming Immigration Could Add 8 Million Democratic Votes

“We will be creating a governing coalition for the long term, not just for an election cycle.”

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AK7K0itgQt0

At the America’s Future Now! conference in Washington, DC on June 2, 2009, SEIU International Executive Vice President Eliseo Medina addressed attendees on why comprehensive immigration reform is an important issue for the progressive community to support, and how progressives can forge common ground on an immigration reform strategy.

“comprehensive immigration reform “= “amnesty for illegal aliens”

Report: More than half of foreign-born Nebraska residents aren’t citizens

A new report says 67 percent of Nebraska’s foreign-born residents are not U.S. citizens.

A report from the University of Nebraska at Omaha’s Office of Latino/Latin American Studies says that’s more than 65,600 people. The report doesn’t delve into how many of those are in the country illegally.

In analyzing data gathered by the U.S. Census Bureau, the report says naturalization rates have been increasing since the mid-1990s. More than 27 percent of all Nebraska’s naturalized citizens counted in the 2008 American Community Survey became citizens in a period from 2001 to 2005. To compare, about 8 percent became citizens in the early 1990s.

In 2008, nearly 98,000 Nebraskans were counted as foreign born, or about 5.5 percent of the state’s population.

Arizona taxpayers owed $1 billion from illegal immigration

http://www.kvoa.com/news/arizona-taxpayers-owed-1-billion-from-illegal-immigration/

The cost of illegal immigration has exhausted the Arizona State Treasury. In order to pay for the federal government’s responsibility of securing our national borders and incarcerating individuals who enter the United States illegally and commit crimes, the state has incurred hundreds of millions of dollars of debt to pay these bills,” said Treasurer Dean Martin.

An overlooked McCain boondoggle....much like the nonsense that will come out of the senate.

Bill to improve health care…in Mexico! McCain strikes again!

What would Americans think, then, of a member of Congress who introduced legislation, not to improve health care in the United States, but to improve health care in Mexico?

Insane? Drunk? Unworthy of public office?

What would Americans think, then, of a bill introduced in Congress that required federal agencies to come up with a plan, not to expand health coverage in the United States, but to expand health coverage in Mexico?

Impossible? Unthinkable? Wildly irresponsible?

What would Americans think, then, of the motives of a senator, who not only introduced a bill to improve Mexico’s health care system and extend coverage to a growing population of 120 million people, but gave health insurance companies the right to help devise the plan?

Blatantly corrupt? Grossly indifferent to the well-being of the American people? Downright treasonous?

Unbelievable as it may seem, the Secure America and Orderly Immigration Act of 2005 contained a provision giving insurance companies the right to help devise a plan for extending US health care to Mexico (Sec. 1004. BINATIONAL PUBLIC HEALTH INFRASTRUCTURE AND HEALTH INSURANCE).

Even more unbelievable, the senator who sponsored the bill is not on the verge of being thrown out of office for this odious piece of legislation. No, the senator who introduced the bill, Senator John McCain of Arizona, is on the verge of locking up the Republican nomination to be our next president[snip]

By way of email:

Alert! Obama missed a chance to help American workers by reining in immigration!
In his State of the Union speech, President Obama focused on job creation, but he neglected an excellent opportunity to address the out-of-control immigration that has been so devastating to American workers.

And they accuse the GOP of playing wedge politics? Not even liberals support amnesty so he's just shooting himself in the foot even more.
