As an Army Officer, I once returned a salute with a pencil in my hand. Completely unintentional, but my NCO made a point to mention it immediately afterward and I got the point.

???? Umm... well some think his possible(?) salute was half-*$$ed.

He's on the phone, for Goodness sake! Ok its nice to return the salute but its also nice not to interrupt important discussions with someone.
