Environmentalists Target Brown in New Ad
Boston Globe ^ | 01/29/10 | Susan Milligan

Scott Brown hasn't even been sworn in yet, but environmentalists are already preparing Web ads targeting the incoming GOP senator on climate change legislation.

In Internet ads set to begin running on Monday on Boston.com and other sites, Clean Energy Works -- a compendium of 60 national security, business, labor, faith, agriculture, scientific, economic and environmental groups -- calls on Brown to keep his ``word'' in controlling polluting carbon emissions.

The ad opens with a quote from Brown in which he says that ``reducing carbon dioxide emissions in Massachusetts has long been a priority of mine,'' then flashes to a photo of Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell, former Republican Governor Sarah Palin and conservative talk radio host Rush Limbaugh, overlaid with the word ``no,'' according to a draft of the spot provided to the Globe.

``Senator-elect Brown, Massachusetts takes you at your word,'' the ad continues. ``It's time to lead on bipartisan clean energy climate legislation.''

The spot unusually targets a lawmaker who has not even taken office yet. But it also may presage a new era of politicking in the Bay State.

With its all-Democratic, largely liberal congressional delegation, Massachusetts has rarely been a target of so-called ``issue ads,'' spots made by interest groups pushing a particular proposal. Bay State lawmakers have long been reliable votes for the Democratic legislative agenda.

But the election of Brown gives Massachusetts a potential swing-voter for the first time in decades, said David DiMartino, a Democratic consultant advising Clean Energy Works. Since Brown has determinedly said he will not always vote party line as a Republican representing blue-state Massachusetts, environmentalists and other liberal-leaning groups see an opening to pressure the incoming freshman.

Well, Massachusetts COULD use a few more nuclear power plants. Don’t think the greenies are going to be too happy with Scott if (when!) he takes that tack.

He can tell them all to contact the national arbor society and plant trees. That should help reduce CO2 and won’t cost a bunch of money.

Course if they want to spend money, they could just build bike trails, and all start riding bicycles to cut down on exhaust fumes.

Liberals seem determined to pressure him to vote for job killing legislation. And he's not even in office yet!

How about we all wait until after 2011 to vote on such things?

Hasn’t anybody noticed that FORMER SENATOR Kirk has voted repeatedly?

None of the votes has been of major significance.

But I think he is doing so for a significant reason: to establish a precedent, or to keep the Democrat leadership’s options open, just in case an important vote could be engineered.

Aside from the obvious answer (he’s a Republican), I want to know why in the HELL he has not yet been sworn in!
