I agree, so if the repair kit only includes linkages and this doesn’t work, bye-bye Toyota. This is no doubt an electronics issue of some sort.
It’s going to wind up in court, with full discovery. Toyota officials are going to be pilloried like the tobacco tycoons if they lied about the floormats/linkages/ECUs.
Especially since that would tend to help GM.
Really, it would end up helping Ford, but that is a whole ‘nother discussion.
Well, if the feds think something is dangerous they can ORDER a recall. Toyota could certainly proceed with this recall without getting permission, but then the feds might issue their own as well. The “permission” basically amounts to the feds saying “We have enough faith that this will fix the problem that we won’t issue a recall of our own for now”
If the system is primarily electronic (as in gas pedal -> signal -> ECM -> signal -> throttle body and injectors), I could definitely see many or all of the mechanical system components being the same. After all, if all the gas pedal does is send a 0-10V signal to the ECM, why would a Corolla need a different one than a Tundra?
I don’t know, I’m just guessing that the dimensions and geometry of a Corolla to a Tundra will mean different mechanical parts, whereas OTOH, the ECUs can all be identical. I’m just guessing though. But for sure, the floormat story was bogus from the start, and part of a coverup. People who tossed the floormats out last year after earlier warnings have had total runaways, with no foot on the gas pedal, while in cruise mode or coasting.
Could be. For example, they may assume a Camry driver will be smaller than a tundra driver and give them a narrower, shorter pedal. But I’ll bet the pivot, spring and so on would be common. They’d have to be on crack not to.
OTOH....I have a Chrysler LH platform sedan (300M), and the little plastic pockets that screw into the arm rest for you to grab to shut the door. Chrysler would REALLY have to be on crack not to make those all the same part, right? Well, all four are different, and NOT interchangeable! I tell ya, the ID10T’s are running the engineering asylum.
There is no direct connection from the throttle to the engine.
The gas pedal controls a rheostat and the injection system is controlled through the computer.
in aircraft fly by wire systems there are redundant back up systems in Toyota's it's a single system.

The recall has nothing to do with floor mats, it’s a computer failure problem.
First they said it was the mats. We even got a notice to remove them from the driver’s position. Now they know there are other problems....I was just saying the mats were very poorly designed and bunched up under your feet. Therefore, we removed all of them.
