Do we think twice about calling police?
Las Vegas Review-Journal ^ | 31 jan 10 | Vin Suprynowicz

Charlie Mitchener, the Las Vegas business owner who was handcuffed and disarmed after presenting a concealed weapons permit along with his driver's license to a police officer responding to a burglary call at his place of business Jan. 3, has provided me with his Jan. 19 follow-up letter to Metro.

Mitchener says he decided to write police about his ordeal, detailed in this space on Jan. 10, lest his "silence may put someone else at risk."

"Shortly before 5 a.m. Jan. 3, the alarms in my office sounded and notified TSI, our security provider, that a break-in had occurred," Mitchener writes. "They ... dispatched a security guard.

"My wife, Peggy, and I arrived at the office about 5:15 a.m.; the security officer had arrived just before us. ... The security officer informed us that he had called Metro and they told him not to enter the building. ...

"The security officer said, 'I don't want to tell you what to do, but I'm familiar with situations where the bad guys will come busting out and your vehicle may provide them cover, so I suggest you move it away from the building.' "

I can't imagine handcuffing the owner as the first step to responding to a call about a break-in.

When TSHTF, I think many communities (certainly not all) will see the cops as part of the problem that needs to be dealt with.

One thing for sure, if you get shot or stabbed and can’t get outside to wait for EMT’s, tell the 911 operator you are having a heart attack or you will bleed to death waiting for the swat team to clear the building. The cops have gotten to be complete idiots when it comes to responding to crime scenes. Probably some new training protocol from the feds.

As far as a written reprimand, no, but they're dealing with it through a training component.

Bad cop! No donut!

Probably some new training protocol from the feds.

The protocol is their safety above all else, especially yours, citizen. Rights be damned. This story illustrates that quite nicely. Besides, the courts have ruled that the function of the police is to clean up the mess afterwards, not actually protect you.

I agree that this is a training situation, but one that indicates that officers are not receiving important training, or didn’t remember it. The business owner did everything right, and he and his wife appear to be very “orderly persons.”

So the next step would be to suggest to a gun ownership association in the area that it would be a good idea to provide some training information to the area police forces, to avoid such incidents in the future.

Generally, police prefer not to mess up, but it’s hard to remember all the details of proper procedure day in and day out. So for the most part they don’t mind refresher materials, as long as they are well documented and easy to read.

So what dance of joy do you do when you hear an officer died in the line of duty? You support the criminals which means you think people should get a medal if they shoot an officer.

And every single person who hates the police would throw a baby in front of a gang member and go cower in the corner.

Nobody with an ounce of common decency hates the police.

Yes there are bad apples but only scumbags hate the police.

Which 'right' are you talking about?

Only communities made up of worthless brainless scum of the earth do.

No decent person hates the police.

And only someone with an IQ in the single digits thinks all police are bad because of a few bad apples.

More police hate and therefore love of gangs.

Do we think twice about calling police?

I didn't until we started paying the county for police patrols.

I had read the original post but don't remember the "training" part of it.

This is beyond absurd. They come upon a crime scene where the place is not secured and the cop goes into "training mode"? She put the lives of the owners at risk. There is no other way to say it. She should be reprimanded but reading the responses of the management she won't be. They'll probably write a citation of merit for the munchkin cop.

Unfortunately you are probably correct. I’m a retired cop, and I feel that way.

“...but it’s hard to remember all the details of proper procedure day in and day out.”
Sorry, but I totally disagree. We aren’t talking about some arcane paperwork procedure that the average officer does once a year.

Where did I say anything about hating the police? Thanks for putting words in my mouth, then slaying that strawman though.

So what dance of joy do you do when you hear an officer

BTW, you're scum for suggesting I enjoy the death of police officers

You support the criminals which means you think people should get a medal if they shoot an officer.

No bootlicker, I support law abiding citizens being able to assert their God-given rights. Again, you completely lie and put words in my mouth.

Oh, I don't know...how about the right to bear arms and the right to self defense? Or is that too "libertarian" for FR?

Never EVER call the cops

Nothing ever gets better and all they do is fill out reports

Today's cops are NOT your friends

I'll step up and bite on your question.

How about the right to be secure in one's property against illegal search and seizure?

How about the 2nd ammendment?

I personally know several police officers, all of whom I have great respect for, this woman officer in question is incompetent and a danger to the society she is sworn to protect.
