One of Sister Mary's friends came to her defense today, saying the Lake County nun only wanted to protect the child she is accused of taking from her parents six months ago.
Laura Maria Caballero, also known as Sister Mary, of Eustis thought the parents of the 2-year-old girl were not taking the best possible care of the child, the friend told the Orlando Sentinel.
"Her whole life is giving," Hendrick said. "She's always in court fighting some battle for some kid."
He has met the child she is accused of taking and said that Sister Mary would take her for a few weeks and get her healthy.
The girl "loved Sister Mary," Hendrick said.
He said the girl's parents would sometimes bring the girl to the nun without adequate food and leave her.
Eventually, Sister Mary "thought she should have custody...because the mother did not know how to care for the child."
He added, "They're not mean-spirited. They just don't know how to take care of a kid."
Sister Mary contacted Hendrick after her arrest in South Florida when she was seeking transportation.
The nun was arrested in January as she returned to Miami from Argentina.
"She said it was just set up to arrest her when she came back," he said. "All I was doing was helping a person in need. She was trying to save a life and do it legally."
The 2-year-old arrived in Orlando late Tuesday from Argentina, where investigators say she had been living with the nun and a man affiliated with her church.

I’m going to guess that it’s not that difficult for her to stay celibate.
“The parents claim Caballero offered them $2,000 to take Maria permanently and also threatened to report them to the state Department of Children and Families and have them deported as illegal immigrants, investigators said.””
Well, at least she would be supporting her instead of us.
Guilty (and crazy eyes)
