The IRS Is Looking For 60 12-Gauge Pump Actions Guns To Arm Its Investigators

Courtney Comstock
Feb. 3, 2010, 12:56 PM

Working for the IRS doesn't sound so wimpy anymore.

The IRS apparently has plans to buy 60 Remington Model 870 police 12 gauge pump action shotguns for the Criminal Investigation Unit.

According to the federal business government website, these guns are serious.

The Remington parkerized shotguns come fully loaded with:

* A fourteen inch barrel
* Modified choke
* Wilson Combat Ghost Ring rear sight
* XS4 Contour Bead front sight
* Knoxx Reduced Recoil Adjustable Stock
* Speedfeed ribbed black forend

We're not sure what kind of IRS duty requires this kind of combat artillery, but it sounds badass.

My oldest daughter’s best friend was a math whiz in high school and went on to pursue her accounting degree. She works for the IRS and participates in audits of businesses. She practices regularly at the shooting range and wears a gun and bulletproof vest to her appointments.

She’s not your old-school accountant. The IRS means business.

Just adding to the existing inventory of shotguns....

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) intends to purchase sixty Remington Model 870 Police RAMAC #24587 12 gauge pump-action shotguns for the Criminal Investigation Division. The Remington parkerized shotguns, with fourteen inch barrel, modified choke, Wilson Combat Ghost Ring rear sight and XS4 Contour Bead front sight, Knoxx Reduced Recoil Adjustable Stock, and Speedfeed ribbed black forend, are designated as the only shotguns authorized for IRS duty based on compatibility with IRS existing shotgun inventory, certified armorer and combat training and protocol, maintenance, and parts.

Just like Al Capone and any other capo sent his armed thugs to local businesses to take the ‘privilege of staying in business’ tax. Al Capone was arguably less crooked than a Nancy Pelosi!

Ask your daughter’s friend how she feels working for History’s most powerful criminal mob?

I use an 870 for deer hunting. It’s a reliable basic shotgun, and pretty much standard issue for most law enforcement.

I bought mine because the 870 comes in a left-hand version. So does my Model 700 30-06. I love handing it to friends and asking them to operate it. ;-)

14” barrel?

Didn’t they kill a guy at Ruby Ridge a few years back for selling one of these?

What does the IRS need with sawed-off shotguns?

Hmmm. Kinda makes you wonder about this whole “consent of the governed” thing.

The IRS has had shotguns for many years. They deal with some pretty rough customers and they have to stock up on marmament at times.

Just an area that you normally don’t see.

Those tip-hiding waitresses aren't going to just shoot themselves, you know.

I am glad they are shotguns, though.
Because at 200+ yards, they might as well be squirt guns.

Oh, and here's a totally random statistic: 60 new shotguns means about 1 shotgun per million armed taxpayers.

I had the same reaction. I’m not sure I’ve ever seen a shotgun with a barrel shorter than 26 inches, except, of course, in the movies.

Well, it is yet another evidence that ‘the militia’ should be able to carry coach guns, scatterguns, blunderbusses and short barreled shot guns without special license.

EPA, IRS, and many other federal agencies have SWAT teams. Saw the EPA SWAT team in action in Amarillo back in the mid ‘90’s, raiding a waste disposal firm next to my daughter’s dentist. Flack jackets with “EPA SWAT” on the back. Company was supposedly illegally disposing of medical waste (never heard what became of that). Carried M-16’s or AR-15’s (didn’t get close enough to tell) and semi-auto sidearms. Remember Clinton’s 100,000 new police? These are some of them.

Wasn't it one of Obama’s aides that said something glowing about Mao and “Power coming at the point of a gun?” As Al Capone once said, “You can get more out of people with a kind word...and a gun..., that with just a kind word.”

To think one of my childhood friends from Chicago once laughed at me when I asked if he knew any mobsters. He laughed so hard and said, “Do you think they walk around wearing signs?” Looking back, I'm beginning to think my naive question hit the mark more than was originally assessed.

I’m sure the government got a special deal on this purchase. They probably only paid $20,000 apiece for these guns. What does the model 870 retail for $1200 or $1300?

Now that we’ve had 10 years of real war, I’d hope some of the interest by loopy wargameboy police folks would be diminished by marking to reality, and thus we’d see less Waco SWAT, less Columbine SWAT, and less EPA SWAT such as you saw. Less SWAT break-ins into the wrong house, etc. etc.

12 guage pumpguns. Big Deal. The irs does go after some pretty shady folks. But think back, how often does the irs publicize what weapons they are buying? This story came out for a reason. Probably as a veiled threat or as a diverson story about some real hardware they are buying.

The IRS deals with the mob, probably gangs and money laundering operations. The perps are not small business operators but criminals who employ very violent people to protect their assets.

I do not have a problem with this at all.
