A prominent US climate scientist at the centre of the "climategate" leaked email controversy has been virtually cleared of professional misconduct by an internal university enquiry.
Michael Mann, of Penn State University, featured regularly in the more than 1000 emails that were hacked from the University of East Anglia in the UK last November. His emails and comments have since then featured in countless blogs and news articles. Some have claimed the emails reveal that mainstream climate scientists have massaged data in order to demonstrate that climate change is caused by human activities.
The scientists in the emails, including Mann, have also been accused of seeking to prevent the publication of sceptical research in academic journals.
Penn State University opened an enquiry into Mann's behaviour in November, shortly after the emails were leaked into the public domain. After sifting through 1075 emails and focussing on 47 that were deemed relevant to public accusations of misconduct leveraged against Mann, they have, by and large cleared his name.
Off the hook
The internal enquiry has found that Mann did not "participate in, directly or indirectly, any actions with an intent to suppress or to falsify data". For the full report, click here (pdf).
Nor did he "delete, conceal or otherwise destroy emails, information and/or data" relating to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change's 2007 report. One email that has received much media attention was sent to Mann by Phil Jones, then director of the UEA's Climatic Research Centre, on 29 May 2008. It asked Mann to delete some emails regarding the 2007 IPCC report.
In the months since the email leak, Mann has repeatedly said that he did not heed to Jones' request. Penn State's enquiry confirmed this...

Baloney. That phony “hockey stick” crap was his all the way.
He certainly used the fraudulent “data” to his advantage...
Gee, PSU excuses the obvious fraud of a faculty member who brings in literally millions of dollars in grant money to the university?
I’m SHOCKED; SHOCKED, I say!
What about that leaked model that showed that any data you put in arrived at a upward hockey stick? Wasn’t that this freak, Mann?
Having the same university that benefited from Mann’s grants investigate Mann, is the height of conflict of interest. If Holder wasn’t such a partisan, he would have sent someone to investigate to protect the taxpayer.
ACORN was exonerated by their internal investigation as well.
Internal investigations are wonderful.
Ha ha ha ha ha.
“...Nothing see here ma’am. Move along”
“...ignore that man behind the curtain. I am the great and wonderful Oz!”
Ha ha
I grew up in PA and I can’t tell you how disappointed I am in PSU. When is honor and integrity in the leaders of our institutions? I guess it went away with all of the political correctness.
This is a joke, right?

Butt covering by academia. Nothing to see here, keep moving.
And who is investigating PSU????? Everyone in the sponsored projects administration at PSU should be investigated for covering up blatant scientific fraud. What are the indirect costs that are skimmed off by PSU on federally sponsored projects? 46.5% I believe. Of course PSU has a dog in this hunt.
Michael Mann, of Penn State University......
This fraudster got $500,000 in 0bama stimulus money for his research. True! He brings lots of Federal grant money to Penn State so they are not going to disown this mutt
With these de-greed and over credentialed hack-ademics you must always follow the money
A panel of leftist idealogues investigated one of their own and... SURPRISE! ...found him to be as pure and innocent as the driven snow.
-n (Gaaah!)
hokey stick Mann ping
scandal ping
BS.
Ummmmm...I can feel his trustworthiness and professionalism oozing through the screen and I feel more innocent already just reading the article.
These universities are identical to the lowliest ghetto drug dealer -— It’s all about the Benjamins
These universities are so tied to Federal loot and grants and funding I trust my plumber and pizza maker a thousand times more than the top administration figures which are full of gays and lesbians.
Another Gomer Pyle moment: Surprise, surprise, surprise!
Of course, he was cleared. Imagine all the folks he could bring down if he wasn’t.

Thanks to Willis Eschenbach for the amusing spoof 'reconstructed' photo of Michael Mann.
No doubt many blog readers will be familiar with the infamous 'Hockey Stick' graph, which used 'proxy' reconstructed temperature data up to 1980, grafted onto Hadley CRU instrumental data. The IPCC liked it so much that it appeared several times in the Third Assessment Report of 2001, thus enhancing the man-made global warming scare. A very different graph was used in the 1995 report, which clearly showed a Medieval Warm Period and the Little Ice Age.
To cut a long story short, Steve McIntyre and Ross McKitrick published critiques of the Michael Mann et al 'Hockey Stick' in 2003, which were updated in further publications in 2005 (GRL and E&E), followed in 2006 by a presentation to the National Academy of Sciences Expert Panel, Surface Temperature Reconstructions for the Past 1,000-2,000 Years.
Steve McIntyre and Ross McKitrick wrote on the Nature blog:........
It's ok though, the era of Mann Made AGW is rapidly coming to a dismal conclusion.
People don't trust climate scientists, their peer review process is a joke and a good portion of them have ethics that Bill Clinton would look down on.
Another perspective.
Amen, Brother!
So I guess the Indian train engineer slash IPCC President who warned us that the Alps were melting and who got this revelation from a college students term paper and “climbing” magazine is free to go to!
That gravy train will be grinding to a halt if it hasn’t already ... the university would have done better to ask themselves what Mann will be doing for us from now on.
Then they could have pretended they actually had integrity and distanced themselves from this loser. Besides, that’s the best way to stay in the running for future research money.
and who was surprised by this???
In January 2009 the National Science Foundation held a conclave during which a panel that included Mann, his buddy Revkin at the NYTimes, exalted on the comming cataclysm. It was moderated by some lickspittle from Yale University. If hubris could be measured, the panelists scored an 8,0 on the Richter scale. Suffice to say, all, including the NSF, now have egg (or something worse) on their face.
Isn’t that like saying that your girl friend is “all but” not pregnant?
Hysterical laughter here at this ever so unbiased investigation. Idiots investigating fools.
LOL, gee, who saw this coming!
Now that this charade is over, let the state legislative hearings begin.
The fox has concluded his investigation and found no evidence of fowl play in the mysterious deaths of those chickens.
This is a joke, right?
Yes.
Gee, Penn State clears scientist in a situation where, if not cleared, it would have given Penn State a black eye.
Color me surprised.
It is just like the IPCC whose authors investigate their own publications and conclude they are great. The IPCC and PSU are kangaroo courts - the prosecutors are the jurors.
This was to be expected. For PSU to have done the right thing would have been a real surprise.
PSU is the now the most corrupt university in America. Kinda like the mafia investigating itself. His multi million $$ research Grafts have no bearing. How bout we have an outside source review these crooks?
Pray for America’s Freedom
That was *really* strong sarcasm on my part. I should have made it more explicit.
I couldn’t agree more. Totally different issue, but very much like Duke never doing the right thing concerning the railroading of their lacrosse players.
Whitewash.
Just think: if you did this, you’d be in jail.
But because he’s a rich lib with powerful friends, this crook is going to F**KING walk.
Good to know that Obama is returning the government “to the people”.....
All I can say is, I’m sure glad I’m not a PSU graduate and I sympathize with those who are.
Note to self: Add PSU grads to Duke and certain other universities’ grads as “those who need to be checked out more carefully before hiring.” I will NOT hire another “Joseph.”
