PSU scientist cleared by ethics committee

E-mails had cast doubt on research

Thursday, February 04, 2010

By David Templeton, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

A Penn State University Inquiry Committee has cleared a noted climatologist of three charges of ethical and research misconduct in connection with hacked e-mails from a British university that cast doubt about his global warming research.

In its report Wednesday, the committee said Michael E. Mann, director of Penn State's Earth System Science Center, neither falsified nor suppressed research data; did not attempt to delete, conceal or destroy e-mails, information or data; and didn't misuse privileged or confidential information available to him.

But the committee will convene a panel of "faculty peers" to determine whether the purloined e-mails he wrote to colleagues deviated from accepted academic practices and "undermined confidence in Dr. Mann's research and climate science specifically."

Now that Penn State’s charade is over it’s time for a real investigation.
Followed by an indictment.

I only hope the wasted month hasn’t given Mann time to “tidy up”.

Mann's "hooey" stick was entirely discredited years before the e-mails from East Angilia were unearthed. The entire construct was concocted out of whole cloth. "Research" played no part at all.

Maybe stupidity, cupidity, sloth, trickery, pandering, concealment aren't unethical, but if these qualities lie at the heart of your research, it sure ain't worth much.

Penn State is not only covering for the global warming B.S ers, but for it’s own reputation. This is a joke, and should not even be taken seriously.

This professor needs to be in Prison. Manipulating data in order to get funding is completely illegal.

Penn State should be ashamed to try to cover this up. Everyone knows it. What a joke!

Penn State University has a pig on the fire in this one. They are getting grant money for their global warming studies. Why would they jeopardize their revenue stream by discrediting their research department

Nice try Penn State. Too bad it is not hard to figure out what you are up to. If I had my way, I would have a judge figure out how guilty Penn State is of fraud.

I guess they believe that Clinton did not have sex with that woman either.

Uh uh UH uhhhhh! In his famous utterance, Clinton said that he did not have "sek-shul relations" with that woman. He spoke the phrase artfully, in the manner of "subliminal man", trying to compress it into a single word. His intention was obvious. He meant for the phrase to stand in for "sexual intercourse", while seeming to be more general in scope.

So, you know, he was making an effort, giving a nod to the truth, as it were, in his lawyerly way. Obama just says anything that's convenient.

PSU has completely blown its reputation on this. In the long run, this attempt to cover for Mann and the university will affect how its alumni and staff will be perceived, and some doors will be closed to them.

The "ethics" committee lacks ethics. Mann lacks credibility. The university is wasting the taxpayers money to keep any of them employed.

fyi, Wharton is part of U. of Penn (private, Ivy university)

Penn State (where this Prof. Mann is located) is the main public university

although there are plenty of dubious aspects to Penn, as with just about any liberal-dominated institution

It’s a greenwash. Check out Steve McIntyre’s comments on his “Climate Audit” blog. The commission didn’t interview anyone actually knowledgeable about the subject matter.
