Senate Democrats unveil job-creation package

The first step will likely be a tax incentive to employers who hire new workers. Other details and the price tag remain vague.

Reporting from Washington -

Eager to show Americans that they are focused on reversing widespread unemployment, Senate Democrats on Thursday unveiled a package of legislation dedicated to spurring job growth.

"Our No. 1 emphasis is going to be on creating jobs," said Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.).

But the political question hovering over the newfound push is whether it comes too late to quell growing voter dissatisfaction with how Democrats are handling the economy.

Ironically, the announcement of a job-creation package came on the same day that Scott Brown, the winner of a special election last month in Massachusetts, is set to be sworn in as a new Republican senator. Brown is to be sworn in at 5 p.m. EST.

That election was widely viewed by Democrats and Republicans as a referendum on the Obama administration and the Democrats' stewardship of Congress. Today, Sen. Charles E. Schumer (D-N.Y.) said his party was paying attention.

"We heard the message of Massachusetts," Schumer said. "They said, 'Focus immediately and don't take your focus off jobs.'"

In the short term, the victim of the Democratic pivot is likely to be the controversial healthcare overhaul, which has been shelved indefinitely as House and Senate leaders attempt to figure out a way forward.

IF THEY REALLY WANTED TO “FOCUS”, THEY’D LEAVE UD THE HELL ALONE!! Art Laffer said that “if the federal government gave everyone a 1 year, 9 month hiatus from taxes we’d be in the black with a buzzing economy”!

a tax incentive to employers

These used to be called "loopholes" and we went thru a great deal of effort to remove them from the tax code over the past 30 years.

Buried in this:

Brown's election victory certified

*****************************EXCERPT********************************

Brown will be taking over Kennedy's coveted office space in the Senate Russell building. Sen. Paul Kirk, who has held the seat since his appointment after Kennedy's death, currently occupies the office and will move out.

Who’s going to hire an employee he doesn’t need and will have to pay salary and benefits for, in return for a measly one-time tax deduction?

He'd better scope the joint for bugs and hidden cameras.

I haven’t found a single AP story on the scandalous debt ceiling increase approved today in the House. The one story on Politico didn’t even bother to state that every GOP member of the House voted no. No bias there, of course.

As Rush points out, this package is BS.

It is supposed to give a $5000 tax break for each new employee hired.

A company is not going to hire a $70K employee for a $5K tax break if there is no work for that employee to do.

It is the bloody STUPIDEST thing, and they hope the American people will fall for the idiocy.

This is their idea of stimulating the economy. These people are deranged.

They just don’t get it. The economy is down and jobs with it but not because businesses can’t borrow money (they can but don’t want to), and not because the government isn’t offering one time incentives to hire someone.

The economy is down because the Rats have repeatedly shown that they hate people who make money and they want to punish success and take over as much of private industry as possible.

Exactly. Exactly. Exactly.

Especially your last sentence. I have been thinking about this lately in the context of illustrating the difference between liberalism and conservatism.

Liberals view the prime function of business as providing jobs to people, as a cash cow to milk for tax dollars. There is no recognition that someone may put their life savings into a business of their own and work 80 hour weeks running it. Their profits are vilified and they are denigrated as greedy and selfish. Business owners should work for nothing for the sole benefit of the worker.

Conservatives view the prime function of business as a way to make money and reward those who are willing to work hard and risk their own capital. The fact that it provides jobs to others is icing on the cake.

It works in obammyland where if you wish for it - it comes true. DOW hangs by a thread at 10K and Nancy and Harry have a jobs bill. Shoosh - talk about perfect timing. Reminds me of Nancy’s response to $145 bbl oil; outlaw a three-way lightbulb.

They Democrats are trying to run small business - period!

Raise taxes, then give conditions to offset the increased tax liability.

Will the tax incentive be more than the new and higher taxes they’ll have to pay?
