ANCHORAGE, Alaska Records show that Sarah Palin hasn't paid any property taxes on cabins that have been built on two backcountry plots partially owned by the former Alaska governor.
There are no tax assessments for the two-story, house-sized cabins, a workshop and a sauna spotted Thursday in an aerial survey. Property taxes totaling $156.13 were paid on the land in 2009 but that bill did not include anything for the structures because the local assessor didn't know about the new construction nearly 100 miles north of Anchorage.
The issue has attracted the attention of local tax officials who conducted the scheduled aerial survey of properties in the area on Thursday. The area is accessible only by floatplane, snowmobile or four-wheeler.
Dave Dunivan, the assessor for the Matanuska-Susitna Borough, said such a survey had not been done there in five years, before construction started on the cabins.
Palin's attorney, Thomas Van Flein, said it is not the responsibility of property owners to report structures that go up on their land.
"It is the borough's job," he said in an e-mail. "The property taxes on this parcel are fully paid and have never been delinquent."

Alaska is a very big state... that tax assessor/collector needs to make sure he/she spends equal time looking over the whole state (might even find some bleeding heart liberals that have structures on their properties).

Property tax is unconstitutional anyway. It removes the ability to own land as property. Instead you only lease it. As soon as you fail to pay taxes that land can be taken away...so when you buy you may get control over the land but only as long as you pay rent to the gov’t.

Palin Derangement Syndrome in full bloom. I wonder if this moron could point to one other time they have done one of these “surveys” and made a big deal about it. It’s probably only a coincidence that the photos showed up on Palin-hater blogs. This is just more BS from the Palin-hating Obamites.

Sounds like it's the assessor’s responsibility to access value and levy tax owed. There is no story here.

This is where you have it totally wrong. Its the statis corporatocracy that fears her as if she were dracula making an unscheduled withdrawal from the local blood bank. You have understand that as governor she took on the most powerful corporation on earth—Exxon-Mobil and kicked their buts. She forced through the Tran Alaskan Gas Pipeline and forced them to develop other properties that they were warehousing. Anyone who doesn’t believe that Rockefeller doesn’t control directly or indirectly Exxon, JP Morgan Chase, much of the media and a large portion of both parties, should go back in American history starting with the midwestern republican presidents in the late 1800’s to the present time. This is not just political static, she represents a threat to the way that big business is done in this country.

This is the Talkeetna/Trapper Creek area. If its snowmachine or 4-wheeler accessable it is most likely the Petersville area just west of Trapper Creek. All within the Matanuska/Susitna Burrough. Popular snowmachine area, and lots of people from Anchorage/Wasilla have cabins there. Some are very nice, others are tiny 1-room snow machine cabins.
Many friends and co-workers have places back in there, and I heard of one getting hit with something similar for building another small cabin on his property. The state uses airplanes regularly for stuff like this. The Matanuska/Susitna burrough has property taxes, other more remote burroughs do not have property taxes.

This sounds even more alarmist than most of the nonsense on DU. Furthermore, it was the state which denied more than 20 drilling applications for the Pt. Thompson lease, and construction on the gas line is nowhere near being started. Grow up.

Oh shock, horror, Sarah Palin passed through a legal loophole. Big fat deal: she didn’t put the loophole there and didn’t try to cover it up either.
How about the loophole she DID put in Alaskan ethics law — a loophole which most ironically ran her out of office because it did not require squat in terms of liability of people who complained?

They might discover it the next time the county does a reassessment, but in the mean time, if I spend my own money to improve my property, it's none of their damn business.

I know many people who never quite finish their houses & cabins; prop taxes are the reason.
Most of rural Alaska has no prop taxes anyway; we don't here in Eagle.
If she does as well as she did as Governor up here; the USA will be on it's way solvency once again; if a country remains after OB man.
