Why are liberals so condescending?

Late to the thread, but could't resist. Krugman wrote of conservatives:

"What do these people really believe? I mean, they're not stupid -- life would be a lot easier if they were. So they know they're not telling the truth...."

How ironic. I have asked myself exactly the same question -- about liberals, probably thousands of times. Especially discussing prolife issues, gun rights, etc. They clearly know they're wrong yet they persist. Why? Why? Why?
