Senator Richard Shelby has placed a rare blanket hold on all nominations from Barack Obama, according to reports from both The Hill and Talking Points Memo. Until he lifts the hold, none of these nominations can proceed to a floor vote for confirmation. While some may initially believe this to be a good strategy for fighting what have appeared to be selections of hard-Left appointments, a spokesman for Shelby makes clear that the Senator is most interested in protecting pork

Well that’s okay, all the important positions (like Czars) don’t have to be approved by Congress anyway. :)
I think Shelby was a D, then switched parties, sometime ago.
Anyway, Alabama can either keep him or not if they want the Pork.
Is there a latest count on number of Tsars? I knew we topped the Ruskies. :0
The reason Shelby switched to the Republican Party is because the last Democrat President removed spending items from Shelby’s State. IIRC, it was a military base and some other big dollar items.
The Republicans had recently gained majority in both houses, so it was also a power switch, IIRC.
Or was it the other way around?
I don’t mean to sound like I’m condoning Shelby’s actions, but I understand why he’s doing it. When Parker Griffith switched to repub. he was taking off some key committees and is receiving some “discipline” from the dems. These defense cuts and cuts to the space programs are going to hit Alabama hard, in particular the area I’m in, due to Space and Rocket center and the redstone arsenal. And the dems. are threatening some other actions to punish Griffith. Shelby is trying to maneuver to stop some of the bleeding by holding up these appts. It looks bad I know, but he is truly trying to help his state by keeping as many jobs as he can. I hate politics, and it will be best to just let the chips fall where they may, and it pains me to say this because I know there are going to be many affected by all of this that is going on locally.
That’s exactly what Obama’s doing, and he’s doing some of it as punishment for Griffith’s party switch. It’s Griffith’s district that will suffer.
Just another porky reason I won’t vote for Shelby again.
All he cares about is pork and, as a country, we need to stop the pork. If the States can’t afford that bridge to nowhere they want to build then it doesn’t happen.
Unless ! - it’s an emergency, i.e. flood, earthquake, etc.
I condone his actions. I’m surprised to see so many pork purists on Hot Air’s comment board. This is as much a military thing as anything else. I can’t believe how quick conservatives are to condemn a GOP Senator who finally gets a pair, tries to better military preparedness and at the same time keeps us from having to put up with more radical Obama appointments, if only for a little while. Here we go again with the handwringing, thinking that Republicans will look bad again. It’s all about looks to too many so-called conservatives. It is this insecurity by Republican voters that makes our politicians lay down every time there is a big fight..”perception is reality”...”what will this or that look like”. These stupid BS quotes repeated over and over again, while they talk themselves into submission again and again. Ed Morrisey and Allahpundit live with their tails between their legs.
You’re right, when I responded I had failed to read the whole article. He is doing the right thing in this. I love Shelby, I have voted for him many times, but I do know that of my state’s 2 senators, he is the one who has signed on for pork projects we don’t really need.(the vulcan statue repairs for ex.) I made my statement based on that knowledge without getting all the facts. :/
By the way he has always had a pair, lol. He is a good man and he will not back down when he believes in something. I give him an A-.
Yes, Emily. You’re one of the few who didn’t panic and condemn Shelby right away. Way to go.
Hypocritsoops...sorry...redundant term.
