For the first time ever, the Pentagon is requiring military bases worldwide to offer the so-called morning-after pill.
WASHINGTON - The Pentagon for the first time will require military bases worldwide to offer emergency contraception or the so-called morning-after pill, a military spokesman told Fox News Friday.
The decision follows a recommendation by an independent panel of doctors and pharmacists in November, Pentagon spokesman Bryan Whitman said. The panel determined that emergency contraception should be added to the military's list of medications that must be stocked at each military facility.
The decision represents a policy shift from the Bush administration when such a change was resisted, Nancy Keenan, president of the abortion rights group NARAL Pro-Choice America, said in a statement praising the decision.
Over much resistance from abortion opponents, the Food and Drug Administration approved the over-the-counter sale of the morning-after pill to adults in 2006.
The drug, which contains a high dose of birth control pills, can be used to prevent pregnancy after unprotected sex by blocking ovulation or fertilization. Critics of the contraceptive say it is the equivalent of an abortion pill because it can prevent a fertilized egg from attaching to the uterus.
It is not known when the policy would be implemented.
Military hospitals are legally forbidden to perform abortions. When asked if the new policy violated that law, Whitman had no immediate response and said he'd have to defer to the policy experts.

Instead of working to allow gays in the military, we should be working on getting women out of a lot of the areas of the military.

While I'm theologically opposed to both forms of these birth control methods, it's tough to make a logical argument to allow one and not the other. For all practical physiological purposes, they function identically. Both the daily pill and the "morning after pill" are a type of abortion.

If it is as in the Catholic faith a no no to take either than it is the responsibility of us Catholics to advocate/teach other Catholics/Christians this.

Well, homosexual brothels. Despite the pregnancy rate for sailors at sea, it's still fairly low for women who are actually impregnated at sea. The lion's share of pregnancy evacuations are for women who deploy pregnant, albeit unknowingly. Certainly, there is sex at sea between male and female sailors, but because of berthing arrangements and segregation, it's reasonably minimized.
But, when homosexuals have the run-of-the-house with berthing accommodations, it will be like a gay bath house on some of these ships. It is an unarguable fact that promiscuity is a integral part of the homosexual lifestyle - amongst men and women homosexuals. To think that will be curbed or retarded in any way aboard ship, is pure folly.
What a shame to see our military dragged into the swamp of political correctness and social engineering. *sigh*

Will the pregnant recruits still be punished for their actions? I saw a report in recent months that the men would also be punished. If the pregnancy "goes away", is the charge dropped?
And what of sexually active homosexuals in the ranks? Will an end to "don't ask, don't tell" open the door for sexual relations on the base?

with women in the field, it’s only a matter of time before they are captured and raped by the enemy. (there would also be the ‘friendly fire’ rapes, of course)
i could only imagine how ugly it would get in stand-off style fighting, where both sides are at a bit of a stalemate (like WW2 trench fighting or entrenched town fighting). the troops would be forced to listen to their comrade being loudly raped... calling for help... which might bring them out from behind cover

I agree with you. The military is no place for women, or fire and police departments for that matter.
Females living with males in the necessarily confined quarters of a warship is as major mistake. I am so grateful that I was able to serve aboard a U. S. Navy ship prior to the era of radical feminism.
