Brown's independence could face Senate test
Washington Post ^ | Feb 6, 2010 | ANDREW MIGA

Scott Brown says he's a different kind of Republican, a centrist willing to work with Senate Democrats to fix health care and the ailing economy.

But his independent bent is likely to be sorely tested in a bitterly divided Senate where party loyalty is often at a premium.

"If he wants to have a future in Massachusetts politics, Brown has to live up to being a New England Republican - fiscally conservative, socially moderate, independent-minded," said Dante Scala, a University of New Hampshire political science professor.

"Is Obama going to try to craft some room for himself in the center?" Scala said. "If so, Brown might be something of an ally."

Note how the MSM is already trying to undermine GOP support for Brown, by painting him similar to RINOs Snow and Collins. I hope conservatives and Republicans won't fall for this.

Scott Brown ran on being against Obama's socialist healthcare, for fiscal conservatism and as the "41st" vote against the Obama agenda of communism and anti-Americanism.

The MSM is trying to destroy him by accusing him of not being "independent" enough if he votes with the Republicans while also trying to paint him to GOP as "not conservative and Republican enough".

"And let me say this, with respect to those who wish to harm us, I believe that our Constitution and laws exist to protect this nation - they do not grant rights and privileges to enemies in wartime. In dealing with terrorists, our tax dollars should pay for weapons to stop them, not lawyers to defend them." ---- Scott Brown, Victory Speech Jan 2010

Hey professor Scala, rotate on this.

We go to professor Larry Sabato for all our stupid liberal advice.

“fiscally conservative, socially moderate, independent-minded”

Luckily Obama, Nancy and Harry are fiscally irresponsible, socially radical and hard core partisans. So I don’t think there is too much worry of them presenting any reasonable. And if they do come up with something reasonable (i.e. a tort reform bill), he should give it consideration.

I suspect after the elections of 2010, he’ll fit right into the mainstream.

Obama says that he wants to work with the GOP on Health Care. Fine. Let's improve health care and shrink the size of government as it pertains to health care. It's a double win for America on both the deficit and health care fronts.

Mr President shut up and let's get to work!

You can sense the bias in this article in the very first sentence. You'll never see the Washington Post say a Democrat should be a centrist to work with Republicans.

What a joke.

To the WP, the "center" is halfway between Nancy Pelosi and Fidel Castro.

"Brown's challenge will be to turn himself into a Democrat in order to induce the DC power structure to invite him to a cocktail party."

When did Ted Kennedy ever adhere to any of that?
Never stopped the swimmer from regularly being re-elected for over 40 years, did it?

Oh, ya. Absolutely. I mean all the politicians from Massachusetts are like this. Barney Frank, Marty Meehan, Lurch, Cadillac Duval, etc. All fiscally conservative, socially moderate and independent-minded.

((who is this Dante idiot?))

The Washington Post arrogantly assume they direct Scot Brown what to do..not the people of Massachusetts.

Somehow I’m sure Scott fully understands who he answers to.

Of course there isn't. And, it's quite clear from the legislation passed this year with TOTAL Democrat support, there's no such thing as a fiscally conservative Democrat, either.

"Democrat in order to induce the DC power structure to invite him to a cocktail party."

As a guy who has lived in the NoVa/DC area off and on since I was a child, I can promise you that everyone in elected national office gets invited - and goes - to those Georgetown/Foggy Bottom cocktail parties. Liberal and Conservative alike - everyone from Barney Frank to Fred Thompson go to those book parties, embassy parties, misc fundraisers etc.

The dirty little secret no one talks about or admits is that entertaining in DC is no longer done by the "elites" of DC, but by lobbyist. When you go to these parties - and I've been to more than a few - you'll notice that although they may be in someone's home, they're sponsored by a lobbyist and sometimes even a liquor company. It's not at all unusual to see a "Grey Goose" or some other liquor company's signage up.

Also, after he was sworn in, a reporter asked him how he felt about being the 60th vote and Scott quickly reminded that reporter that he was the 41st vote!! I don’t think he’ll let us down!

The problem with this whole idyllic “fiscally conservative, socially moderate” Northeastern Republican is that they’re almost NEVER there for us on fiscal issues either!

I don’t expect Scott Brown to be leading the charge on a Constitutional marriage amendment or prayer in school, but I damn well expect him to vote against higher taxes and push a pro-growth agenda, not work to make the Porkulus bill suck just a lttle less like Snowe/Collins.

No one will convince me that being anti-tax is a liability in the tax-smothered New England states.

Well, they aren’t Republicans. But this is the guy who delivered that laughable week-before poll to the Globe with Coakley up by 15. NH’rites should be embarrassed by him.

All the autographs that Scott has signed recently (and I’ve seen about a dozen) are: “Scott Brown, #41”

State controlled media notion of an "independent" Republican: someone who votes regularly with Democrats. Notice they never run a profile on Democrats "independent" to vote regularly with the GOP for the good reason they don't exist. Brown has conservative views, that has them fit to be tied to no end and these people want him to vote like Ted Kennedy! I guess they must think Massachusetts voters are idiots that they didn't vote for all that anti-Obama stuff. The MSM has a low opinion of the American people, In a liberal town like Washington, Brown is going to have to be a strong from Day One, a task fortunately made easier by being a Republican in Massachusetts!
