A Welsh mother has been jailed after she bit a midwife who was helping to deliver her baby.
Leanne Pennington, 26, was sentenced to 20 weeks in jail after sinking her teeth into the arm of 41-year-old midwife Carolyn Burden during the final stages of labour at Prince Charles Hospital in Merthyr Tydfil last May, news website southwales.co.uk reports.
Mrs Burden, herself a mother of four, went back to help deliver the baby after receiving first aid treatment.
Pennington, classified a "high risk patient", admitted to the assault which left Mrs Burden with a swollen and bruised arm.
"It was completely out of the blue," Mrs Burden told southwales.co.uk.
"I was taking care of the woman in labour and she bit me.
Mrs Burden was forced to undergo six months of HIV and hepatitis tests, which turned out negative.
The midwife has since returned to work, but is still troubled by the incident, saying it made her feel "very vulnerable".
Wouldnt it have been faster just to test the patient for HIV ???

I understand from the article that she got treatment and went back for the delivery but......she was waiting at the wrong end.
Midwives...scary.
She appears to have been working at the wrong end.

There alot more going on than just waiting at the foot of a bed.
Actually no - not scary at all.
Considering the state of healthcare perhaps Mom was trying to show her that she was at the wrong end.
Making someone feel “vulnerable” is a crime?
I’ve delivered 3 and never had a doctor or nurse near my mouth. Things that make ya go hmmmmm.
I’ve given birth 3 times and was there for every one. :-) No one came near my mouth.
Good thing she didn’t have a blank do not resuscitate order in her file. She wouldn’t have made it home at all.
To put any appendage near a birthing mothers mouth during childbirth is stupidity. I think the midwife should be punished for incompetence.
And did it in a very testy way. lol
I mangled the stand for the bed control, that looked like a car suspension spring, when I had my son. I also almost tore my DH’s pants off. That’s what being in that much pain does. It turns one into something like the incredible Hulk, with little ability to really control what’s going on. I don’t think I would have bitten anyone though.
I help to birth all three of my children and all 3 grandchildren.
The mid wife was at the wrong end of the pt.
