CA: Evacuations continue as officials scramble to clear debris basins ( Los Angeles )

Rivers of mud and debris damaged or destroyed dozens of homes as they cascaded down the hillsides of La Cañada Flintridge. Crews are racing to make room in catch basins before more rains arrive.

A flash flood warning in the San Gabriel Mountain foothills damaged by the Station fire has been lifted and a second band of rain cells passed through the burn area without triggering more of the mudslides that damaged or destroyed 43 homes in La Cañada Flintridge, closed several roads in the Santa Monica Mountains and washed out portions of Angeles Crest Highway and Ortega Highway near Idyllwild.

But with debris basins along the San Gabriel Mountains near capacity or overflowing, any additional rain or thunder storms will carry the threat of more damaging debris flows.

Los Angeles County Supervisor Michael Antonovich, who appeared with officials from the fire and public works departments at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, said he was shocked by the storm damage in La Cañada Flintridge, which he felt could have been prevented if the US. Forest Service had acted more quickly to prevent the spread of the Station fire last fall.

"Earlier this morning I toured the site and I was devastated; I was really, really, shocked by what I had seen," Antonovich said. "The homes destroyed, automobiles pushed out of the way by the storms, the mudslides moving heavy concrete barriers. . . . It was as if you were at Universal Studios on the studio tour seeing a war zone area."

The second of two cold fronts to sweep Southern California will hit the Los Angeles area Saturday, bringing rain, possible thunderstorms and the threat of mud and debris flows in hillside areas scorched by last year's wildfires, according to the National Weather Service.

Rains on Friday snarled traffic and prompted road closures in foothill communities bordering the Angeles National Forest, where more than 160,000 acres remain charred from the Station fire. Los Angeles County saw relatively light rain, but Orange and San Diego counties experienced heavy thunderstorms and 45-mph wind gusts along the coast.

Forecasters predict up to 1 1/2 inches of rainfall across the coastal and valley areas with as much as 3 1/2 inches in the foothills and mountains.

A flash-flood watch was put in effect for portions of Los Angeles, Ventura and Santa Barbara counties on Friday, and it will remain in place through Saturday, according to Jamie Meier, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service in Oxnard.

Mountain resort areas can expect 12 to 20 inches of snow at levels of 6,000 to 7,000 feet, dropping on Saturday to about 4,500 to 5,000 feet, just below the Grapevine on Interstate 5, Meier said.

It should also be quite windy, with mountain regions experiencing 20- to 30-mph winds and gusts up to 55 mph, Meier said.

We have had about 48 hours of no rain (nothing since early Saturday morning).

Our rivers/streams and even dry most of the year streams are high and flowing at high and rapid levels.

Hopefully for our South Landers, they will have a dry spell.

Latest 12z NAM/GFS guidance show that showers will likely spread across much of the forecast area by Tuesday afternoon...so will be bumping up probability of precipitation to likely in all areas during that time frame. Other upcoming change will be lowering of snow levels. Per coordination with San Diego office...will have snow levels between 3500 and 4000 feet Tuesday afternoon...lowering to as low as 2000 feet late Tuesday night. Winter Storm Watch will be posted with afternoon package for la/vtu County mountains. And will highlight other low snow level impacts for other areas in upcoming Special Weather Statement. The low snow levels could bring significant impact to major traffic corridor such as Interstate 5 north of Castaic as well as Highway 14 through Soledad Canyon.

huh.
