US east coast digs out after record blizzard (32.4 inches recorded at Dulles Int'l Airport)

WASHINGTON (AFP) – Residents of the US east coast began digging out from under a thick blanket of snow Sunday after a record-breaking blizzard paralyzed Washington and the region, snapping power to 350,000 residents and killing two people.

The monster storm stretched more than 600 miles (1,000 kilometers) from eastern Indiana across into New Jersey and then down as far south as North Carolina, affecting tens of millions of Americans.

With winds gusting at almost 60 miles (90 kilometers) an hour, meteorologists said they had recorded snowfall as high as 38 inches (96 centimeters) near Baltimore, Maryland -- a record.

As of late afternoon Saturday, a total of 32.4 inches (82 centimeters) was recorded at Dulles International Airport outside of Washington -- another record, according to the National Weather Service.

That two-day accumulation beat the previous record, compiled during the blizzard of January 1996, the service said.

The heavy, sticky snow toppled trees and snapped power lines, leaving more than 350,000 people without electricity in Maryland and neighboring Virginia. Related article: Monster US storm boon for forecasters: expert

"Snowmageddon here in DC," President Barack Obama told Democrats in a speech, only a year after chiding the capital for over responding to small snowfalls.

Forecasters warned residents to hunker down, with no let-up in the weather for most of the day, and said chilly temperatures on Sunday would mean the wet snow would swiftly turn icy.

"Officially this won't break records in DC, but unofficially, you bet it will," Paul Kochin, an expert in northeast weather systems, ..

"It's very rare to have two such big storms in one season," .. the capital region was crippled by a smaller but still massive storm in December.

Maryland and Virginia, were bearing the brunt of the storm and seeing the highest snowfalls, ..

It’s a good thing the globe is warming...otherwise they could have received 54 inches of snow...

They said on the news 32 inches at Dulles and 18 inches at National. Still trying to figure that one out.

I live near Dulles, we normally get 4-8 inches a winter and that’s the cumulative total.

Dec 5th - 6”
Dec 22nd - 22”
January 8th - 1.5”
February 2nd - 6”
February 6th - 24”

Total = 59.5”

Dulles is about 25 mile west of DC and that area quite often gets much more snow than Reagan, which is about a mile south of the DC boundary on the Potomac. Alexandria/Arlington area (Reagan) usually gets less snow than Reston/Fairfax area (Dulles).

There were snow bands that set up and didn’t move much. If you were under one of those, you got a good 8-12” more than someone just 40 miles away.

Southern California weather currently at 10:03 a.m. is:

Sunny, 61 degrees in the shade, cobalt blue sky’s, flag shows a very mild, on-shore Pacific breeze...Flowers have exploded after the rain, and the Orange tree must have 4,000 oranges on it.

Do they still have Ski Liberty in Maryland? I went there once; lame excuse for a ski hill. But if it's all you've got....

It's getting to the point where mid-Atlantic ski slopes won't need snow making equipment. 60 inches is what they get in a lot of years at real mountains. I wonder what they got from this at Snowshoe?

US east coast digs out after record blizzard (32.4 inches recorded at Dulles Int'l Airport)

This article is an obvious fabrication and total lie. It has to be.

Approximately one year ago 'Climate Expert' RFK Jr, said that there will never again be any seasonal changes in the D.C. area due to Global Warming - in effect it will always be Spring there - and as such, it will never snow in the D.C. area again .

So who you going to believe?
Your lyin' eyes or a 'Climate Expert' named Kennedy?

My nieces’ husband is an MP at Andrews AFB and they had a tough time keeping up with the snow.

Here, in NW lower Michigan, it was sunny and 20 degrees. Today it’s going to be sunny and 25 degrees. That’s sweat shirt weather. We seriously could’ve used a foot or so of that snow here.
I will call Dick Cheney this week and have him aim his weather machine at us, here.

I lived in Reston, near IAD, in early 79 when we had a record snow fall that year. I got out a map of the US, drew a line from Atlanta through DFW to LA and up the west coast and swore I would be on the other side of it by October 1st, with a job. I got my wish and was on my way the end of Sept. I recall being trapped in my subdivision in 79 for almost a week due to the drifting snows. Then came a thaw and we had to deal with flooding. I am not a snow lover.

That would drive me crazy at this time of the year. It's winter and I want winter weather. We only got 6 lousy inches in northern Ohio. I was away yesterday, so I just finished clearing the snow from about 2500 sq. feet of sidewalk and driveway. I love winter weather. I'm just sad that other people are getting the snow we usually get. We've only had about 24" all winter.
