WASHINGTON -- Failing to overhaul the nation's immigration system, currently a backburner issue for Congress and President Barack Obama, could play a pivotal role in key mid-term election races in November, according to a new study on Latino voting patterns.
The report by America's Voice, which supports comprehensive new immigration policies, says revising the laws is the defining issue for Latino voters. The report says that progress - or the lack thereof - in revamping immigration laws and regulations could affect as many as 40 congressional races in areas with sizeable Latino populations, including the re-election bids of Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., and Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., just two years ago his party's presidential candidate.
"Immigration reform is a litmus test in the Latino community," Eliseo Medina, the president of the Service Employees International Union, said during a conference call about the study.
Latino leaders and groups are similarly frustrated with Republicans. They feel that the GOP is promoting and campaigning on an anti-immigration agenda in hopes of attracting so-called "tea party" voters who prefer stricter policing of the U.S. border to a comprehensive policy, which they consider to be amnesty for illegal immigrants already in the country.
"The president did make a promise to the Latino community, and it has not been forgotten," said Janet Murguia, president and chief executive officer of the National Council of La Raza, a leading Hispanic lobby. "We're also looking to Congress - Democrats and Republicans - particularly Republicans, who can't just continue to say 'no' ... we'll hold all these elected officials accountable."

Let the wetbacks try it. I don’t think “blanket amnesty” is one of the Tea Partiers most favorite topics.
Unions were needed at one time. Not any more.
They’re no different then the mafia.
Out with the SIEU and LaRaza.
About two years ago these same LaRaza jokers thought they’d shut the country down with a national strike. Nothing much happened except retail sales jumped slightly.
Yeah sure keep the threats up we will not forget you either that is for sure!!
Since the Dems are the ones in power, and it is uncontested on this issue (since McCain and Graham will support them), then it seems like LaRatza will be throwing the Dems out of power, if they don’t get their cherished Amnesty.
Seems like a good deal for the Republicans to simply block it then.
The same Latinos who voted overwhemongly for the biggest Marxist this country has ever seen, despite McCain working harder than anyone to try and pass an amnesty bill?
Why the heck would Republicans give two hoots what the Latinos think?
” They feel that the GOP is promoting and campaigning on an anti-immigration agenda in hopes of attracting so-called “tea party” voters who prefer stricter policing of the U.S. border to a comprehensive policy, which they consider to be amnesty for illegal immigrants already in the country”
Which is exactly right.
Hey, Eliseo, go piss up a rope.
why not they prolly dont pay taxes anyway...i love it when people vote for more taxes and less pay...just look south to see what happens....maybe latino’s should think about it...
“Unless they are citizens, they shouldn’t be voting. If they are citizens I’m wondering why they want to ruin this wonderful country?”
Because for so many of them ethnicity trumps everything.
hahaha for sure
When will these bastards get it that we are NOT against immigration; we are against ILLEGAL immigration.
“Ive been to East L.A. and Tijuana and there is no difference.”
That’s a fact.
Do that and illegal aliens will deport themselves.
...they’re warning McCain? And amnesty is their core issue?
Is that a joke?
If they were really up to speed on the issue, they would know that MCCAIN WROTE THE AMNESTY BILL.
And they’re threatening not to support Republicans because of it?
That’s like Free Republic threatening not to back Democrats unless they go pro-Soldiers....
“The same Latinos who voted overwhemongly for the biggest Marxist this country has ever seen, despite McCain working harder than anyone to try and pass an amnesty bill?
Why the heck would Republicans give two hoots what the Latinos think?”
But they can’t vote...can they?
The COMMUNISTS at the SEIU are in for a RUDE AWAKENING.
CAPITALISM = JOBS
Socialism = ECONOMIC RETARDATION.
Illegal aliens have an average of a 3rd grade education. Ironically, those who wait in line for years to immigrate legally have much higher levels of education.
So with a stroke of a pen they become legal. Are you ok with that?
Say, wasn’t it Rove or was it Bush that went up before the corrupt racist La Raza organization?
Tea Party says they can tip 104 seats.
Do they think we are stupid? There is nothing to win by passing amnesty. Anyone who would be for amnesty for illegals would vote for the Rats anyway.
I don’t really want to disabuse the Illegal Alien Lobby of their low opinion of McCain. If they think it’s a good idea to campaign against him I say viva idiotas! lol
BS. All sorts of groups claim they are the swing vote in this or that election, all in an attempt to embellish and exaggerate their electoral importance. The biggest swing vote in 2008 was the white guilt vote, and that vote seems to have mostly come to its senses.
The thing about all these claims to Latino political power is that, if immigration laws were enforced and no amnesty granted, all these trends of Latino growth in the population would not happen as currently projected. And La Raza and other groups and Dim politicians know it.
This is an empty threat.
Nice pic. Legs-R-Us !!
That's a slam on 3rd graders...I've ran into illegals, that can't even spell their own freaking names...Even when using a *%*#$ interpreter. Others are just confused about which name they're supposed to be using at the time.
This is what is in the works right now in the House of Representatives concerning illegal immigration.
Exactly and they think these people are important?
you said it.
from your lips to G-d’s ears
you said it.
from your lips to G-d’s ears
Average, dragnet2, average. ;^)
“So with a stroke of a pen they become legal. Are you ok with that?”
Absolutely not. They are lawbreakers, and should not be rewarded. They should be deported. Legal immigration means following our laws and playing by the rules. Like my mother did when she came her at age 20.
It's why the greedy wealthy running many of these business love these guys...
These guys think company benefits mean a 5 minute break....With an attitude like that, they allow their employees to drink beer on the job!!!..
A win win for America!!
Our country should too.
The Miami Squirrel is handed out free to government schools in “Miami-Dade” county every morning, thus justifying their bogus circulation stats.
What do you call a Latino or Latina who dutifully applies to a USA consulate for legal immigration?
A: A fool, a dupe, a sucker. Thanks to your socialist union and your racist group, they will be left at the far end of the line. You two are anti-Latino LEGAL immigrant!!!!!
Aside from the larazza fringe, most American Citizen “latinos” want the borders controlled and do not want so-called “amnesty”. They aren’t fools.
I beg to differ with you based on first hand experience living in the Rio Grande Valley (look on a handy Red/Blue political county map of Texas). “Latinos” (or whatever they wish to call themselves this year) consistently, meaning EVERY DAMNED election cycle, vote liberal Democrat. I’m 67 and I go w-a-a-a-y back with these people.
Oh, one more pop quiz for Senor Medina and Senora Murguia,
What do you call a Guatemalan or El Salvadoran who sneaks into Mexico via its Southern Border?
A: A target! Bang, Bang! Thanks for playing!
You don't suppose their own report would support their own bias?
McCain pushed harder then anyone for amnesty and they responded by voting for Obama in greater numbers then they did for Kerry.
They are all talk. Sure they’ll maybe vote one way, except they won’t.
