Buoyed by Obama’s commitment to appeasement, Iran formally announced the move on al Alam the Iranian state television. "Today we started to make 20 per cent enriched nuclear fuel... in the presence of the International Atomic Energy Agency inspectors at Natanz," an unnamed official told al Alam.
The move caused international alarm and gave new impetus to Western calls for new sanctions on Tehran despite opposition from China, which insists that negotiations could still succeed.
The move indicated the utter failure of the United Nations backed plan wherein Iran was required to exchange 75% of its low end enriched uranium stocks – only 3.5 % enriched in return for an equivalent amount of 20% enriched uranium. This was ostensibly to be in the form of fuel rods to be used in a research reactor. The rods were to be produced by the French and the Iranians were to use it only to produce medical isotopes.
Iran put the final nail in the coffin on that deal with its announcement. By all accounts, Iran lacks the technology to make the fuel rods itself. It is now clear, beyond a shadow’s doubt that Iran is seeking to produce weapons-grade fuel.
Weapons-grade uranium is 90 per cent enriched, but the technology to achieve the leap from 20% to 90% is elementary. The first steps of enriching to 20% are the crucial ones.
The world now looks to Obama as it remembers 1937 all over again.
