WASHINGTON – Crediting civil rights-era protest songs and their spiritual predecessors for his election, President Barack Obama on Tuesday sat in the East Room of his White House and listened to an all-star lineup of performers pay tribute to the music that he said fueled freedom marches and civil disobedience.

The nation's first black president transformed the grand ballroom into a concert hall packed with members of his Cabinet, Congress, civil rights leaders and students for a program that will air on public television later this week for Black History Month...

"The civil rights movement was a movement sustained by music," ..

He said activists from coast to coast were inspired by spirituals, felt their will sharpened by protest songs and base broadened by artists of hope. He said their work paved the way toward a more just America that allowed him to make history in 2008 with his election.

the left tells us that color should not matter and it should not so why does the left always bring color into it

the first black president, no he is also white and arab, try the first non white if they feel color should be mentioned

so much for MLK’s speech where he wanted a color blind nation but then again I guess that is why he was a republican and not a KKK slavery Dem party

Funny ,Obama can sit and listen to the Civil Rights music, but he sat in a racist Church and couldnt hear the condemnation of whites by his minister.

The hybrid-bigot President.

"So what are his musical ideas to sustain the Obamacare movement?"

I'd pick: "I Wanna Be Sedated" by The Ramones.

” Tuesday night’s concert is just the latest imprint first lady Michelle Obama has left on Washington’s social scene.
There was a conga line to Earth, Wind and Fire’s performance when the Obamas hosted the nation’s governors a year ago.”

Sing along now...

Oh We’re Not Gonna Take It
no, We Ain’t Gonna Take It
oh We’re Not Gonna Take It Anymore

we’ve Got The Right To Choose And
there Ain’t No Way We’ll Lose It
this Is Our Life, This Is Our Song
we’ll Fight The Powers That Be Just
don’t Pick Our Destiny ‘cause
you Don’t Know Us, You Don’t Belong

oh We’re Not Gonna Take It
no, We Ain’t Gonna Take It
oh We’re Not Gonna Take It Anymore

(Twisted Sister)

Obama is not an “Arab.” That is inbox mythology. The Luo of Kenya did not mix with the Arabs.

There sure isn’t. I do know that the protest music of that era was at least good music.

Here’s someone from the Motown era who is still putting out some good music but just stays under the radar.

Ah so John Mellencamp performed. Any word on if he sang any songs protesting Obama’s “illegal wars for oil” or is that no longer his opinion on the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan?

Bettye’s been around since Motown but never on the same level as Aretha et al.

In fact here’s her story in song.
