The EPA is Coming; You're the Target!

EPA Set to Issue Tough Air Pollution Rules Power plants and factories will both face higher costs.

A Clean Air Interstate Rule, will impose tighter caps on emissions of nitrogen oxide and sulfur dioxide. The latter, a Clean Air Mercury Rule, will require plants to install cutting-edge pollution control technology. EPA will likely propose the interstate rule in the spring and finalize it by year-end. This regulation will apply tighter, nationwide caps on emissions of nitrogen oxide and sulfur dioxide from all stationary sources, rather than focusing on power plants in the eastern U.S., as in the previous version. In addition, the caps will apply year-round rather than only during the peak smog period of May through September............The new Clean Air Mercury Rule -- which the EPA will propose by March 2011 and finalize that November -- will carry its own costs. Coal-fired power plants will have to install cutting-edge scrubbers and other pollution control technology to get rid of mercury emissions, which can cause neurological damage and birth defects. As a side benefit, the mandated pollution controls would also reduce emissions of arsenic, lead, hydrogen chloride and other toxic substances. Odds are, though, that because of the high costs, utilities will shutter many of their smaller or older coal-fired plants rather than upgrade them.

Depending on how the EPA defines electric generating units, the mercury rule may catch factories along with power plants. Some industrial facilities utilize a process known as cogeneration. The process takes any thermal energy generated by the manufacturing process that might otherwise be wasted and recycles it, either as heat or electrical power. There’s a good chance that EPA will apply the regulation to industrial boilers as well as electric power generators. If it does, there won’t be a single sector of manufacturing left untouched.

Maybe we should power down right now in the DC area. They don’t need electricity. Just think of all the pollution happening right now along the East Coast due to the snow storm(s). Those people oughtta be ashamed.

“.. to get rid of mercury emissions.”

In unrelated news: We should all buy mercury containing CFLs.

Does anyone in the EPA understand the concept of diminishing returns? It seems that these new regulations are well past the point of diminishing returns.

The rats will carefully craft new pollution rules. The major costs will be delayed until they are out of town. The costs will throw land mines into the path of future conservative governments.

I suspect that by the time this legislation is presented to Congress it will be owned by the Republicans, and that is as far as it will ever go.

Well.......I’d have to go back and re-read this article; I’ve been busy at something else, but.....I’ve done a lot of research of late for my own company and it turns out that thse “Regulations” aren’t coming up before Congress; they’re newly promulgated “Orders” that have arisen in response to Court actions that have overturned Bush era restraints on the EPA.

Actually........we’re doomed.

It’s much akin to a dog chasing it’s tail down a sewer pipe into hell.

Imposed by fiat. The current gubmint will not be happy until we have achieved 3rd world status.

They will break us all and be quite happy to do it.

gads, I bought a 2003 Nissan because of the mileage in that nice little rice burner. If the EPA tries to make me sell the car for a PRIApUS they better check my lil ole GOA/NRA card carryin’ wallet first. How the heck are they going to really enforce this madness anyway? maybe we should all make Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn( Gulag Archipelago)and the Bible(Qur’an can go) reading for all in these weird evil days.

Anyone who works for EPA should be isolated, ridiculed and destroyed. Rules for conservative radicals.

If current trends continue the problem will be methane emissions from the mules we will all be riding...if we are lucky enough to have a mule to ride. Future meal planning will run something like this, if I had some bread I could make a BLT, if I had some bacon...and some tomatoes...and some lettuce. I can’t believe Forbes magazine has some idiot telling us how everything is coming up roses. We have to face the fact that we have a cancerous government, like cancer it will grow and thrive until it kills its host.
