Honda Adds 437,000 Cars to Recall (What's happening to the Japanese car makers?)

TOKYO (AP) -- Honda Motor Co. is adding 437,000 vehicles to its 15-month old global recall for faulty airbags in the latest quality problem to hit a Japanese automaker.

The company will replace the driver's side air bag inflator on the cars because they can deploy with too much pressure, causing the inflator to rupture and injure or kill the driver.

Japan's No. 2 automaker originally announced the recall to the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration in November 2008 and the total of number vehicles recalled since then is approaching 1 million.

The latest expansion of the airbag recall includes 378,000 cars in the U.S., some 41,000 cars in Canada and 17,000 cars in Japan, Australia and elsewhere in Asia. The North American recall was announced Tuesday and followed Wednesday by the recall in Asia.

Honda's announcement comes at a time of increased attention on automotive recalls. Though the problems are unrelated, rival Toyota Motor Corp. is in the process of recalling more than 8 million cars and trucks due to faulty gas pedals. On Tuesday, Toyota said it would recall more than 440,000 of its flagship 2010 Prius and other hybrids due to a braking glitch.

''There is a heightened sensitivity right now to anything to do with recalls,'' said John Mendel, executive vice president of sales for American Honda.

Honda's latest U.S. recall airbag affects certain 2001 and 2002 Accord sedans, Civic compacts, Odyssey minivans, CR-V small sport utility vehicles and some 2002 Acura TL sedans.

The recall now affects 952,118 vehicles, including certain 2001 and 2002 Accord sedans, Civic compacts, Odyssey minivans, CR-V small sport utility vehicles and some 2002 Acura TL sedans.

In Japan, the recall covers three models, including the 2001 sedan Inspire.

The revenge of the American Car Maker. (which I guess would just be Ford)

I wonder where the airbag unit is made? I was thinking I heard a report on the news saying that Toyota’s gas pedals were made in China. Just curious to see if there is a trend.

For years toyota has known there was a problem and did squat. Then obammy figured he’d take them down a notch and help out gub mint motors.
Now the other jap car makers see the writing on the wall and are taking the hit themselves instead of waiting for obammy to slap them making it look even worse.

Economic pressure to cut costs invariably impacts quality (to varying degrees). Riding the sine wave.

Correct undermining the competition. Watch your back side, Ford.

How do the cars made here stack up against the cars made in Japan?
During the first recall last fall only cars made here in USA were being recalled.

That might have changed with the latest millions being recalled

Don't forget that the Japanese Gov't went way far left in its last elections.

Wouldn't be surprised if the Tokyo commie-type mediacrats are doing a populist pounding on big business in Asia in collusion with somebody in the White House and/or the EU.

All part of the destroy-the-big-oil, create-the-global-environment movement.

All this hype by Obama and company to reduce Toyota and Honda to a pile of ashes pisses me off.

We’ve had recalls around for a long time. They are a fact of life, nothing more, nothing less. Sometimes they cost lives and sometimes they don’t. Humans screw up. Life goes on. Sad but true...

Note the difference in the hype about the Toyota/Honda recalls and this one from Ford just months ago. I don’t recall even hearing of it.

I was thinking I heard a report on the news saying that Toyota’s gas pedals were made in China.

Nope, they're made by a company called CTS in Indiana. They're also sold to Ford, which was using them in some commercial vehicles they were selling in China. That's where the China angle in the story showed up a couple weeks ago.

A lot of people think that Toyota's not being honest here, and that they were trying to shift the blame onto a non-Japanese supplier rather than admit it's their fault. Many believe that the problem lies in Toyota's software controlling the accelerator rather than with the pedal assembly or the floor mats, but that they'll never admit it until they're forced to.

Seems like a lot of volume but its because they sell so many cars. If it was Volvo the recall would be off the radar.

True Dat!!! Recalls are a way of life (sadly) for automakers. Fear sells, hence the chicken little reaction. Good point.

You are right! I just looked it up. In fact the pedals were made at a Ford plant in China to the Toyota specifications. I can’t find any information about the Honda airbags. They aren’t new cars that are being recalled, though, eight to ten years old.

Nothing is happening to them.

They just don't trumpet all the recalls from Detroit onto the evening news.

Years ago Sony was on top as a maker of electronic consumer goods. In the last 10 years I have purchased several Sony products that either went bad or others that were lacking in usefulness.I think maybe these manufacturers are cashing in on their name much like Sony did.
