Evan Bayh’s residency in Indiana is…an accountant’s office?

With all the posts we’ve done recently about whether or not Evan Bayh lives in Indiana (and for how long he ever might have lived here), we decided to do a little more digging to see where he lives now. The first place we looked was on the Statement of Candidacy he filed with the Federal Election Commission for the 2010 election cycle. You can see it below if you click on the image for the full screen version.

It is a common practice for candidates to use the campaign treasurer’s address on the statement of candidacy. I wouldn’t get too excited about this.

Administrative convenience. What you really want to know is where he owns a house for which he claims a homestead exemption on his property taxes. Home state? Or DC?

"It is a common practice for candidates to use the campaign treasurer’s address on the statement of candidacy"

I'm not familiar with Indiana's election law, but I am a little familiar with a couple other states. Both those states require that a candidate swear an affidavit that they meet the residency requirements, to include giving their physical home address. Both those documents are called Declaration of Candidacy, in the two states I'm familiar.

You would think that Indiana would have a similar requirement I don't know if this "statement of candidacy" is the corresponding document. But, I would have to believe that he had to attest to his residency on some Indiana form. That form should most certainly be obtainable with a FOIA (or whatever Indiana calls their sunshine law) request.

I wonder if Evan Bayh spent as much time in Indiana as Algore spent in Tennessee. It seems these second generation senators often have very thin ties to their parents’ home states.

FEDERAL ELECTION COMMISSION

Instructions for Statement of Candidacy (FEC FORM 2)

"On Line 7, the candidate must indicate the year of the election and the full name and street address of the candidate’s principal campaign committee."

As well as Eliot Engel (D-NY).

Evan Bayh is a carpetbagger. When he ran for governor back in 1988, a question was raised about his residency such as having a DC Driver License instead of an Indiana one.
