It is a ruse still used by "moderate" politicians in conservative states. These otherwise die-hard liberals flaunt their NRA ratings at every opportunity. This is a fact that NRA members (or at least conservatives who belong to the NRA) need to take into consideration when the NRA endorses progressive candidates who pick the 2nd Amendment as their one "bona fide" conservative credential. John McCain immediately comes to mind. He had a lifetime C- ranking from the NRA, but as soon as he became the GOP nominee, he was re-branded by the NRA as a stalwart supporter of the 2d Amendment. Scott Brown also won glowing reviews from the NRA, despite his support of background checks on private firearms sales, a stance that should immediately draw an eternal F- ranking.
Yes, the 2d Amendment is arguably my biggest issue, but it's not the only issue. Just because a candidate appears to be a support of our RKBA, doesn't mean he's not a wishy-washy RINO at beast, or a dangerous CommieLib at worst.
