President Obama wins showdown with GOP
Politico ^ | 2/11/10 | MIKE ALLEN

The Senate confirmed a huge group of administration nominees on Thursday, following a tense exchange between President Barack Obama and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.).

At a White House meeting with bipartisan congressional leaders on Tuesday, Obama warned that he would make recess appointments if the logjam over nominees wasn’t broken before the Senate left for the Presidents’ Day break.

“Mitch, this is unprecedented,” the president said, gesturing forcefully on the Cabinet Room table, according to aides. “If you don’t move any, I’m going to do some [recess] appointments.”

The 27 confirmations mean no recess appointments will be needed during this break, top administration officials said. Recess appointments, which a president can make when Congress is not in session, are temporary and generally last to the end of the year.

The appointments are good until the end of the current Senate (two year) Session. Those sessions last two years, so a recess appointment could last almost two years. Current recess appointments will expire with this Congress, at the end of the year.

I did read the story.... looks like McConnell caved in from what I read. In fact that's how the media is gloating about it, that's how the 0bozo commie pig WH is gloating about it, and that's how the deranged lefties at DUmmmie.com are gloating about it.

This is just a precursor of how the evil bastard 0bozo will play the Repubs like a badly tuned violin at the so-called health care summit on Feb 25. Repubs ought to just dismiss this charade outright, and say unless 0bozo is willing to publicly denounce & reject the current monstrosity bill in it's entirety, there will be no summit with Repubs.

Repubs got their ass handed to them....again!!!

Read the story. This is a garbage headline.

Of course it is - - it's Politico. And Mike Allen is one of their sloppiest writers.

Weren’t there many dozens of judicial appointments that were never filled under Bush?

So they get their up-or-down vote.

Does that necessarily mean they’re all an automatic shoo-in?

How is it a cave? Obama was going to announce recess appointments. At least this way, the nominees now have to be confirmed, and some of them will have to go on the record.

This is a cooked up phony story and headline from the truly vile Mikey Allen at Leftico
The leftist Dem propagandist that lied to a grand jury during the scouter Libby scam.

Recess appointments are ALWAYS preferable to confirmations. They get 1 year, have “acting” in their titles, and lack some financial and other benefits due to their reduced stature. It NEVER makes sense to give in on this. The Dems made Bush recess in John Bolton and many others. Make King Hussein do the same here!

Agreed. Where's the "victory"? The only lasting impression is that Bamaram is spending all his time in congress because he gets stung everytime he tries to play CIC.

It's inedidible (PRK proverb)

Recess appointments have been used by a number of Presidents including Ronald Reagan. Mitch should have told Obama to go ahead and make the recess appointments. No backbone. Mitch needs to go.

The witless pubs ahouls have seen the headline coming. The rats did indeed hold up a ton of Bush appointees. They went so far as to keep congress in session by having one or two senators show up, convene, speak for a couple minutes, then recess for the day. They did this to avoid letting Bush appoint Miguel Estrada and a couple others he wanted to put in important judgeships.

If zero was going to make the appointments during recess, fine, let him do it. Why give him the headline? All it does is piss off the base and undermine support for the pubs, as easily evidenced by many, many posts on this thread.

The real failure on the part of the pubs is that right when the voters are especially anxious to see some conservative spine, they display their yellow bellies instead.

Dumb shitz.

Not only all that, if the pubs were to decline the deathcare meeting now, the spin will be that they’re afraid of zero because he backed them down on these appointments.

I really don’t care about these appointments, but the stupidity and lack of political acumen of the pubs really is breathtaking.

How about the Rats refusing to even hold confirmation hearings for ANY of Bush's appointees in what, 8 years!

To say nothing of keeping the Senate in perpetual session so President Bush couldn't make any recess appointments.

The headline is misleading. The Republicans, what few there are that take a stand, were great in taking a stand on this one against OBAMBO. We’ve got to get close to a MAJORITY in 2010 and a MAJORITY in 2012 in the Senate. We can take the HOUSE in 2010. Most of all, WE must never allow a MARXIST to have complete control of our government again.

It maybe garbage headlines but this is the game Obama and the MSM play. Nothing is bipartisan so the GOP needs to quit handing Obama and “victories”. Make the SOB a lame duck.

The real failure on the part of the pubs is that right when the voters are especially anxious to see some conservative spine, they display their yellow bellies instead.

While you're right on this one point, this whole zero-sum game of politics is what turns people off. "Well, DEMOCRATS held up BUSH appointees, so WE'RE gonna hold up YOURS!"

Putting aside that the Bush hatred around here only pauses for moments like this (that's some logic--we hate Bush, and how you dare hold up that RINO's appointees!), the American people want to see that conservatives don't have to play this childish Rahm Emmanuel crap.

If these appointees shouldn't have been passed, the spineless Republicans should have rejected them if they are okay to be passed, they should be.

McConnell and the rest of leadership are doing a helluva job trying to prop up the Rockefeller wing of the party. We don't need anymore of that, we need conservative leadership. But we don't need childish leadership of any stripe.

I could have sworn we were the "adult" party. I guess that's just talk.
