Conservative manifesto coming soon By: Kenneth P. Vogel February 12, 2010 12:54 PM EST

With conservatives grappling among themselves for control of their movement — and the Republican Party — a group of more than 80 prominent conservative thinkers are set to unveil their version of a mission statement for the right.

What they are calling “the Mount Vernon Statement” in homage to George Washington will be unveiled and signed Wednesday — on the eve of the annual gathering in Washington of the establishment right, the Conservative Political Action Conference.

The big names attached to it include former Attorney General Ed Meese, Heritage Foundation President Edwin Feulner, Family Research Council head Tony Perkins, Media Research Center leader Brent Bozell, Americans for Tax Reform President Grover Norquist and David Keene, head of the American Conservative Union, which is putting on CPAC, among others.

Organizers would not immediately make the text of the statement available, but they billed it as the next generation of the 1960 “Sharon Statement.” That document, produced by a group of young conservative intellectuals including William F. Buckley Jr. and taking its name from Buckley’s Connecticut hometown, helped define the conservative movement for years.

Sarah, Rush, Levin all ought to be there.

And some random tea party folk.

lol...

These guys are douche bags... And by the way.... Did someone forget to tell them that their “services” are no longer needed? They do not set the agenda.

We do...

Although these feeble attempts at relevance are kinda cute in a funny / sad way, its time to show these fossils the door.

Many, including and especially Scott Brown, are trying to distance themselves from the tea party movement it seems.

Fine, put down some ideas on paper then let some real Conservatives such as Palin, Levin, Hannity, Rush, and Coulter edit the final document and I may support it.

Anything that beltway bunch listed in the article comes up with is automatically suspect.

Buckley Jr is an idiot Obama lover why in the hell is he, an example of the low end of his father’s gene pool, a part of this group?

William F. Buckley, Jr., founder of the post WWII conservative movement, died a year ago. His father, William F. Buckley, Sr., died about 50 years ago. Are you possibly thinking of Bill's son, Chris?

I agree eevil. And they speak as though once published, we are obligated to follow this “manifesto”. You and I could sit down and write our own manifesto...and who do we think would then be obliged to follow it? Except you and me. What arrogance.

Agreed. This sounds like an effort to resurrect the establishment Republicans.

The leftists in the media and the democrat party are desperate to revitalize the leftists in the republican party. Expect a newpush to try and give the “Grand Old Progressives” some kind of relevance in the conservative movement.

Its time to retire these fossils.

We do not require any input from the progressive republicans.

Maybe they can have a line item on their ideas for combating global warming and then invite Pelosi over for a group photo to show they really, really want to work with Democrats on the issue.

some of the negative sentiment has probably been provoked by the “manifesto” in the headline, WHICH WAS THE INTENT of the headline.

I agree if those are the “big names” it’s not very impressive. But the story is intentionally pushing you against them. WHAT DO YOU EXPECT??!!
