University of Alabama in Huntsville biology professor in custody regarding deadly shooting at faculty meeting

By Patricia C. McCarter

February 12, 2010, 5:45PM

HUNTSVILLE, AL -- A biology professor is in custody in connection with three fatal shootings on the University of Alabama in Huntsville campus Friday afternoon, according to a UAH official.

Dr. Amy Bishop, a Harvard-University trained neuroscientist, was taken into custody, and her husband has been detained. They have not been charged with a crime.

According to police, three people were killed and three were wounded when the shooter opened fire during a biology faculty meeting on the third floor of the Shelby Center for Science and Technology. The three injured people are being treated at Huntsville Hospital.

In June 2006, The Times published a story involving Bishop, biology professor and her husband, Jim Anderson, chief science officer of Cherokee Labsystems in Huntsville.

Bishop is quoted in the story as co-inventor of "InQ," a new cell growth incubator which promised to cut the costs, size and maintenance involved in the mechanics of cell generation.

Together, she and Anderson designed a sealed, self-contained cell incubation system that is mobile and eliminates many of the problems with cultivating tissues in the fragile environment of the petri dish

Somehow I suspect that this figures into the motive of shooting somehow.

My guess? The U owns her research, denied her tenure, and will make mad bank off her work — while she’ll be tossed out due to not having tenure.

Wonder what the motive could be?

That is one of the most likely scenarios. Another likely contributing in addition to what you mentioned is that egos of some faculties were badly bruised over her achievement.

However, it may be that she is just upset over people trying to have some piece of her achievement, and she overreacted. Only time will tell.

The incubator was a seperate business endeavor with her husband, so I can’t see how the university of Alabama could own it.

Tenure, maybe, but there may have been some disagreement as to who had intellectual property rights to her discovery and and spinoff applications.

Huh, so then she might have gotten kicked over this unethical conduct. If she’d kept it at the university things would have gone much better.

Well, who owns the intellectual property rights of a professor has been an ongoing debate in colleges and universties for years.
One thing is certain: the administrators, coordinators,
assistant and associate deans, and vice presidents, and so forth have not done any creating or writing for years if ever.

According to Schumer, only, if they can prove they can't hit the broadside of a barn at 10 feet, safer that way.

I must say you have guts posting that question.

Universities claim whatever their faculty develop. Years ago a nephrologist at the University of Florida developed a drink for athletes and went to the university to market it. They wanted no part of it so he went to Stokely VanCamp who bought the rights for a million dollars plus some royalties. Immediately the university sued the professor. They got half the rights. The drink was GatorAde.

Yes. If you even so much as thought about a project while on university time, the university owns it. Most universities have it written in the contract with the faculty member or in the faculty handbook that they claim a certain percentage of the rights of any invention. The inventor is typically given 25% of the rights and the university and the company selling the device divvy up the remaining 75%.

My guess is that Bishop thought that she could slide through tenure just on creation of the device, but the tenure committee wasn't buying into that.

The university system does it...NASA does it....the military does it. They all learn how to steal a work conceived within their boundary. In most cases...they helped to sponsor the person and give them the lab or incentive to create the item. Maybe they deserve something out of the deal. In this case...the university will have it’s dirty laundry put out into the court system and the media. That won’t be a positive situation.

FYI, I live on the outskirts of Huntsville and know several students.

This professor has had run-ins with the university president over a new proposal to require Freshmen and Sophomores to live on campus. It was not a popular decision among locals who send their kids there.

The ‘good professor’ led a movement to censure the UAH president. Needless to say, she wasn’t getting tenure. Period.

Information tonight is that she found out this morning that she was denied. Later this afternoon they had a staff meeeting and she shot them in the staff meeting.

She’ll be put to death.

More info from a well placed source in the faculty.

Bishop was one of only a handful of people who didn’t get tenure on the last cycle, and one of two women.
The new provost is Indian and is a jerk, and a chauvinist to boot. Bishop actually had a great research and academic record, very accomplished researcher with some patents. But she was denied tenure and the provost acted very badly towards her, in part because she was one of the ones leading the charge against freshmen residency requirements on campus (big financial deal to the new president and his adminsistration). Widely held rumor on campus that her tenure was denied because of 1) her activity in the faculty senate badmouthing the new president/provost, and 2) because she was a woman.

Furthermore, she appealed the tenure decision and made some very loud and visible waves in doing so, which probably hurt more than it helped. Along the way she disparaged some of her own department faculty members. When her appeal came up, her own department reportedly undercut what little chance she should have had.

Bishop met with the provost earlier today and go the news that her tenure appeal had been denied (this was months under review, unduly long and she had been pressuring them for an answer.) When it came back negative, she want ballistic and showed up at the Biology department staff meeting and you know most of the rest.

Tried to escape the building but was caught trying to leave the scene. The survivors in the faculty department conference room called 911 and the campus police arrived at Shelby Hall in less than 90 seconds, very good work by them to catch her and clear the bldg.

Catty comment. Sorry. Her gripe was with the administration, not her coworkers

BTW,
How many people received tenure?
What percentage were men/women?
How many were turned down?

Perhaps this professor should have understood her lane and not involved herself in policy that did not impact her classroom. The marketplace would have determined whether the residence requirement was a good business decision.

Well, president and provost would face serious backlash from this incident. Even though her action is inexcusable and she should get what she deserve according to Alabama's criminal code, they did make a number of wrong decisions and created many problems.

Her trial would air out many dirty laundries at the university and even at the biology department. They are in big trouble now.
