U.S. city considers surrender to 'green police'

What would life in an American city look like if it required its residents go green to combat climate change? Would it be all trees and gardens and bicycles, or would it look more like oppression under Big Brother's green thumb?

Cambridge, Mass., home of Harvard University, may be giving the country a glimpse of the answer.

Last May, the city officially adopted an order recognizing that there is a climate emergency; but after nearly a year, officials discovered the city's carbon footprint was nonetheless growing worse.

Cambridge Mayor Denise Simmons, therefore, brought together nearly 100 activists and concerned citizens under the endorsement of the city council to convene a "Climate Congress" to make recommendations on how Cambridge can meet its green goals.

The official report of the Climate Congress provides a sneak peek at how life in Cambridge may be about to dramatically change.

"This emergency is created by the growth of local greenhouse gas emissions despite the urgent warnings of climate scientists that substantial reductions are needed in order to reduce the risk of disastrous changes to our climate," the Climate Congress reports. "This proposal is made in the belief that an effective local response is, if anything, made more urgent by so far inadequate global agreements and federal policies for emissions reductions. It is made in the belief that our City should lead by example."

I’m surprised that Berserkeley wasn’t the first to pull this crap. Then again, the only difference between the two cities is the location of the ocean.

In Spokane they’ve banned phosphate dish soap. You have to buy this green stuff that doesn’t clean or remove grease so people drive across to Idaho and buy Dove or whatever there ... I wonder when they’ll start roving police inspection stops looking for contraband soap ....

They should ban showers, then, no one would want to come to their stinking town.

This thread is meaningless without pictures.

Wiki also notes that her predecessor was the first openly gay African-American mayor of an American city.

I know Harvard has deteriorated greatly, but it still has superb physics, math, an engineering departments. Do those folks know how silly their city looks?

Oh well, all the better for those states willing to take all the exiting tech staffs.

I would love to see Cambridge, MA do this. I bet within 6 months or less, there would be screaming & hollering by the liberal retards, plus any remaining conservatives or even moderates would have bolted from that socialist cesspool. I would love to see how their city tax revenues would be gutted once all the legitimate taxpayers & businesses just up & left the city.

Liberals are mentally deranged psychotics and deserve each other. What a bunch of stupid bastards!

Obviously as a conservative I hate the idea of a green police. I do however like the idea of this being implemented at the local level. People in Massachusetts have already seen how ineffective government intervention into health care can be, now they can see what the government's environmental policies will do! Harvard seems like a good place for a case study!
As far as Global Sustainability goes, I think free market forces will help reduce water usage. One of the best arguments these environmentalists can make is that we need to concentrate on the real green economy, money matters. If we can convince people that being more environmentally conservative will save you money, I think more people could be convinced to drive smaller cars and use less water.
My parents are about as conservative as it gets, but they would be Global Warming advocates best friends! My Mom has always hounded me on turning lights off, taking short showers and not wasting food. That is conservatism, and I think most of us should be more empathetic with environmentalists cause, even if we disagree with their alarmism.
As water becomes more scarce, I think prices should go up and hopefully that will deter people from taking 30 minute showers. We saw the same thing with oil, the increasing demand of alternative energy and the reduction of SUV purchases.

east berlin

East Berlin. That's what it would look like. All those tenured Harvard professors ready to move into their 600 square foot flats?

Someday, should this world be blessed with continued existence and also retain some sanity, future generations will look back at Cambridge, Mass. in 2010 and laugh, laugh, laugh at how these primitive idiots thought that they could control the natural warming and cooling cycles of the Earth.

And also because they voted overwhelmingly for Martha Coakley.

I needed a good laugh this evening. I see some very promising ideas.

- Banning meat from meals provided to the City Council and limiting the amounts of dairy served. I would go much further. I would force the city council to have a prolonged hunger strike.

- Providing citizens and businesses with 100-percent renewable energy within 20 years. After 20 years, Cambridge can remove themselves from the grid. They can experience full reliance on the wind and solar gods.

- Contests between neighborhoods for climate prizes. The neighborhood that boasts hottest indoor temperatures in the summer and coldest indoor tempearatures in the winter is the winner. The winner will receive no heat when temperaturs are above freezing. Air conditioning and fans will be fully offlimits in the summer.
