Human Dignity, Dark Skin and Negro Dialect
Acton Institute ^ | 02/09/10 | Anthony Bradley

Black History Month is a time not only to honor our past but also to survey the progress yet to be made. Why does the black underclass continue to struggle so many years after the civil-rights movement? Martin Luther King dreamt about an America where women and men are evaluated on the basis of character rather than skin color. The fight for equal dignity, however, was derailed by a quest for political clout and “bling.” The goal of equality measured by outcomes, sought by means of government-directed racial inclusion programs, overshadowed the more challenging campaign for true solidarity based on widespread recognition of the inherent dignity of all people...Today, in an era when “justice” means obsession with redistributing wealth rather than restoring dignity, character formation has been abandoned.

“content of character” is noticably absent from the public debate these days. “Color of skin” is in.

Scottish American History Month is a time not only to honor our past but also to survey the progress yet to be made. Why does the celtic underclass continue to struggle so many years after the emancepation of slaves and indentured servants? Alexander Hamilton, and George Washington's Scottish Mother dreamt about an America where women and men are evaluated on the basis of character rather than theoir celtic accents. The fight for equal dignity, however, was derailed by a quest for political clout and “bling.” The goal of equality measured by outcomes, sought by means of government-directed ethnic inclusion programs, overshadowed the more challenging campaign for true solidarity based on widespread recognition of the inherent dignity of all people...Today, in an era when “justice” means obsession with redistributing wealth rather than restoring dignity, character formation has been abandoned.

I think that the real point should be that blacks have made themselves what they have become. Nobody forced on them their voting patterns, dependency, and disfunctional behavior. Up into the 50’s the trajectory for blacks was positive, but they bought into lies in the 60’s for the sake of unearned benefits and have, in general, become what everyone knows, including blacks, is a group that has enormous behavioral problems.

What you’re saying, I think, is the point Thomas Sowell has been trying to get across for years.

I wish FOX or some up ‘n coming entrepreneurs would give Sowell and some of his fellows their own broadcast lecture circuit.

Thanks, Galt. I think you’d like the Acton Institute. They’re a strong pro-capitalist organization.

I think I was a bit blunter than Sowell, but he has made similar points.

Well , we shouldn't feel left out with all this ethnic caterwauling. This black history month is pretty much a liberal sham. Slavery was not isolated to black folk, although they made up the demographic majority of slavery.

Many Americans came as slaves to this country and they were not all black. But its politically incorrect to mention it. In particular those suffering under the barely historically acknowledged Highland Clearances were trasported to the Carolinas, and the the Carribean as slaves. But the black folks want the monopoly on slave history. Its quite a laugh.

They there is the" Help Wanted, No Irish need apply" attitude of New England while the black slaves had roofs over their heads and food, some American celts had to hunt , kill and eat rats from the Boston sewers to survive. But we don't want to talk about that now, do we while the myths of an exclusive black slavery are created and perpetuated. You can't truly talk about slavery in this country without talking about all of it,including the indentured servitude of native Americans, Scots, Irish and Chinese.

And all of us have come up in life away from it all. Thats cause for a drink or two!
