Bishops Continue to Betray the Faith -- Status of Reform CCHD Now Petition Effort

've been asked why I support the Reform CCHD Now petition requesting that the bishops suspend all Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD) grants until a thorough review of the program has been completed. A series of reports by Reform CCHD have revealed clear evidence that grants are being given to organizations supporting abortion and same-sex marriage.

Thus far, only two groups have been defunded by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB), though another offending organization, the Center for Community Change (CCC), was scrubbed from their Web site (the section removed described it as being worthy of Catholic support).

What percentage of the pew-sitters who contribute to the CCHD would continue to contribute if they knew that CCHD played a major role in electing Barrack Obama via its contributions to ACORN and other "community organizing" groups prior to and during 2008? My guess is about 50%, given the fact that 54% of Catholics voted for Obama.

My point is that the CCHD is an essentially fraudulent organization in terms of its fundraising activity. Is there any doubt that the first paragraph is true? Whether or not you agree with CCHD's political mission, I hope you agree that it is essentially dishonest to collect money from people who don't understand where the money is going.

Deal Hudson's latest article summarizes the status of the Reform CCHD Now effort. His comments on Father Pavone's defense of John Carr are especially insightful.

In Catholic New York this month, one of big shots at the USCCB said, of this petition, [quoting from memory] "it's an example of how politics is entering the church..."

I don't have the copy here, and a useful search of CNY online is impossible.

But if memory serves, the remark, in its context (which was, naturally, in favor of healthcare for all), was even more of a cowardly political jab.
