Cobb: Pit Bull Attacks Child

(WSB Radio) -- A seven-year-old girl is recovering after she was attacked by a pit bull mix. Cobb County Police Sgt. Dana Pierce tells WSB the little girl was walking home from school in front of the Valley View Mobile Home Park near Eastside Drive, when the dogl came after her. That's when a neighbor, who saw what was happening, ran to her aid, possibly saving her life.

"He went out with a piece of wood and actually struck the dog and was able to get the dog off of the seven-year-old girl," said Pierce. He then scooped the child up and took her to Kennestone Hospital. She was then airlifted to Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston with a serious leg wound.

"Those injuries to her leg were originally thought to be very, very serious. Those injuries and her condition have since been upgraded," said Pierce.

The dog is in the custody of animal control and will likely be euthanized. Charges are pending against the dog's owner.

This is an outrage! When are these children going to stop provoking these sweet dispositioned darling warling precious wecious puppie wuppikins into attacking? I'm sure that the dog was merely "defending its territory" and that the owner had no idea that the child was going to cause the poor innocent thing to attack. Everyone knows that dogs are just furry people and not animals at all, so it must be the girl's fault. Why even police dogs are "canine officers" not dogs at all.

< /sarcasm tag for all of you who voted for Obama and those who think McCain's daughter is anything but an overweight idiot.

Thank goodness for good neighbors.

Yes, heard on the radio this morning that the same neighbor who forced the dog off the child drove her to the hospital.

Let’s not take away from the value of these creatures.

They would make excellent targets for sighting in your rifle, doing ballistic studies on the 50 BMG, or various other contributions to society.

Still waiting to hear about a pack of wild chihuahuas doing the same thing.

I’ve got a neighbor who lives about a mile down the road who has two/ or had two of these dogs. A couple weeks ago they wandered down to my farm where they attacked my two great Pyreneese dogs. One of the two pit’s was dead and the other left on three legs. My female Pyreneese face was tore up some but the big male who is ultra protective wasn’t hurt at all. I went down to the owner of the pits and told him what happened, he could have cared less.

Kind of makes you wonder why he had them in the first place.

Euthanize the dog AND euthanize the owner.

About the same time people stop using attacks as an excuse to post failed attempts at cutesy wutesy satirical humor.

Sorry your female Pyreneese got injured, otherwise a very good outcome. Given that Great Pyrenees dogs were bred to be able to fight off wolves, it is not surprising that your male was able dispatch a pit bull or two.

Pit bulls aren’t inherently mean. Usually it’s the owner who is mean and wants a mean dog. You can make virtually any dog mean. The two meanest dogs I’ve ever seen were Dalmations. Combine an owner who wants a mean dog, and then kids picking on them while they are behind the fence, then one day, the dog gets out and this is what happens. Often to someone innocent who never mistreated the dog.A good watchdog who is protective of his home is a great thing to have, and a good companion. An attack dog is not. I have seen trained attack dogs at buisness locations who, once turned loose in the yard, the handlers had to wear padded suits to put them up or even feed them. IMHO, it is a mistake for someone to want a dog like that around their home.

“Save the dog; euthanize the owner. ;-)”

There is some basis for this sentiment, most of the problems with pit bulls derive from bad owners. That having been said, the pit bull breed itself is simply prone to aggressive, dangerous behavior. Ironically, a good pit bull is typically as affectionate toward humans as it is possible for a dog to be, as their fighting instincts are primarily directed toward other dogs.
