A program that caters to the unique needs of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender senior citizens received nearly half a million dollars in federal funding Tuesday, opening the door for a wide range of initiatives organizers hope will assist thousands of older Chicagoans.
The program, Services and Advocacy for GLBT Elders, or SAGE, is part of the Center on Halsted, a gay and lesbian community center in Lakeview, and was profiled by the Tribune last June.
Its director, Serena Worthington, said the $475,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services marks only the third time that federal money has gone to a program focusing on GLBT seniors.
"It's an affirmation of the work the center does for people of all ages, and especially for seniors," Worthington said. "The projects it funds will be designed to enhance the lives of seniors here and, hopefully, across the country."
Rep. Mike Quigley, D-Ill., announced the award Tuesday at the Center on Halsted. The grant was part of Quigley's appropriations request for the 2010 fiscal year.
Among other things, the money will be used to buy adaptive computer equipment for seniors with disabilities, to conduct research on slowing cognitive loss in seniors with HIV, and produce an HIV-prevention film that targets people over 50, who account for 15 percent of all new HIV cases, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
According to the Center on Halsted, there are more than 40,000 GLBT adults over 55 in Chicago

This is why the stimulus isn’t creating jobs. The money is going to special interest groups that don’t produce a dang thing except disease.

Maybe U.S. Department of Health and Human Services could give a grant to
Pro-Life Action League (Chicago) who have been servicing now for almost four decades to preserve health and humans! Oh, that's right; the government condones their slaughter.

Isnt this illegal? They are discriminating by sexual orientation. I'm tempted to try to start a heterosexual center and apply for the exact same funding...maybe I should apply for much more funding given that gays are only about 3% of the US population. And if I get denied then we have the federal government applying discrimination against sexual orientation.

half a million dollars in federal funding. That's a lot of our money to piddle away during these times! And it is OUR money.

"Isnt this illegal? They are discriminating by sexual orientation."It ought to be. So should Obama's sharing of Science and Technology with "Muslim" states. He's discriminating the foreign aid distribution by religion.

For some reason I don’t think this money is going to fund pinatas. $475,000 is going to pay for a lot of viagra.

A program that caters to the unique needsUnique as in opposite of what's normal. At least they're finally admitting they aren't normal.
Grandpa Walton's gay partner Harry Hay said, "Because if the parents and friends of gays are truly friends of gays, they would know from their gay kids that the relationship with an older man is precisely what thirteen-, fourteen-, and fifteen-year-old kids need more than anything else in the world." Sickening to think of all those kid actors around that sort.

Their choice in lifestyle has guaranteed that they have no family support system (children) to help care for them in their old age. I read an article a few years ago praising a volunteer network that helps elderly gay men who have no family to drive them to appointments and so on. This is even worse because WE have to pay for it.

Such a permanent alteration. I wish they'd think this stuff out first. I know a guy who did that, and he would be considered an unattractive big-boned tall woman (in his 60s). He has never had a "date" that I know of. And his personality didn't change with the surgery. He's still very selfish, if not more so.

Yeah, I know what you mean..... makes me wonder if they ever (especially at that age) wish they hadn’t done that to themselves.
IMHO: The type of medical knowledge and expertise to turn these people in to the opposite sex should be reserved for the truly physically deformed and in need of reconstructive surgery and not done just because someone has a gender identity crisis.
Just another abuse of the medical system.
