JOE BIDEN RIDICULED FOR WEARING ASHES
Catholic League ^ | 021710 | Bill Donohue

Posted on 02/17/2010 2:24:51 PM PST by Fred

Fox News analyst Bob Beckel today criticized Vice President Joe Biden for wearing ashes on TV; today is Ash Wednesday and Biden is Catholic.

In the middle of a discussion on President Obama’s stimulus plan, Beckel gratuitously said, “Sorry about laughing, but I looked at Joe Biden’s forehead, and I know it is Ash Wednesday, but I’m not sure I would wear that ash on the air. Anyway….”

Catholic League president Bill Donohue wasn’t amused:

Bob Beckel’s admonishing remark, “I’m not sure I would wear that ash on the air,” makes us wonder whether it is the public display of ashes he finds risible, or the religion that sports them.

In any event, there is no record of Beckel ever lecturing a Jew about wearing a yarmulke on TV or a Muslim wearing a turban. Must be something about Catholicism that bothers this guy. We’d love to know what it is. At the very least, a clarification about what he meant is in order.

It's Biden pretending he's a Catholic that bugs the heck out of me.

“My views are totally consistent with Catholic social doctrine.

“There are elements within the church who say that if you are at odds with any of the teachings of the church, you are at odds with the church. I think the church is bigger than that.”

Bob Beckel’s admonishing remark, “I’m not sure I would wear that ash on the air,”

I think what Bob is trying to say is: "Come on Joe, it's not like you are fooling anyone into thinking that you are acutally a Catholic!"

It's not just Beckel.

Among the secular Left it is, and has been for a long time, open season on Christianity, especially conservative Roman Catholicism.

I'm Catholic, and while I obviously do not know what's truly in Biden's heart his past words and deeds lead me to one of two conclusions:

1. He was wearing them as a show of false piety.

or

2. He forgot to wash them off before going on TV.

Even a non-Catholic can be marked with ashes at a Catholic Ash Wednesday liturgy, just not recieve the Eucharist.

*Biden’s a pseudo-Catholic so the ashes are perfectly acceptable.

I would proudly defend Biden’s right to wear ashes on his forehead if he would proudly defend the lives of children in the womb. How can someone disavow a fairly fundamental belief of the church he is identifying with?

"However deluded Joe may be, I don’t wish him outside the Church."

That's the problem with a lot of these dems. They're "inside" the church when it's politically expedient, but outside the church when casting votes.

Actually, he’s not entitled to wear ashes—because he’s a notorious, obstinate public sinner. Ashes are a sacramental, signifying participation in repentance for sin. And Biden is obstinately clinging to the sin of supporting the mass murder of babies. He has no right to pose as a practicing Catholic.

Beckel’s comments were just plain bigoted and ignorant.

I can remember when Bob Novak, Mark Shields (a pro-abortion Catholic), Margaret Carlson (a pro-abortion Catholic), and that woman from National Review whose name escapes me, were all on “Capital Gang” together, all of them with ashes.

I been all damn day ranting and raving over Biden and his ashes.

Come on!

First, at 10 am this morn I see him and sure enuff....ashes all over his fine Catholic forehead.

Then, today, 4pm....SAME ASHES!

My ashes don’t last much more than an hour, maybe a smidge left for more than an hour.

He’s got a mascara wand somewhere.

He did the same thing last year. This year I been joking with everyone in the choir....”keep an eye out for ole Joe...he’ll be wearing his ashes on Ash Wednesday.”

I’m from Delaware, btw, and I always ask the priest why they keep giving this abortion lover communion.

Always it’s a shrug.

Well hell, the Wilmington Dioscese is raising funds for a convicted child raping priest, as I recently learned.

Too late Biden, is outside the RCC by supporting abortion, that is his choice to be remove from the RCC.

He can parade around like some kind of Pharisees all day long but it will get him nowhere.

If I was a Roman Catholic, I would be steamed that a a fake like Biden was purporting to be a Roman Catholic.

Seems I distictly remember Jesus distinctly warning against hypocrites who covered themselves in ashes and pretending to be pious (or somesuch).

Pro-abort corrupt Biden disgraces good, well-meaning Christians in the Roman Catholic Church by his fakery.

He ALWAYS, always, goes to great lengths to make public appearances on Ash Wednesday, always with the ashes on the forehead.

Of course there’s nothing wrong with the ashes showing. You’re not supposed to wipe them off.

But it’s obvious as most anything that Plugs wants the world to see his ashes.

If an Ash Wednesday goes by without Plugs on TV with ashes on his forehead I’ll shut up.

I’ve got a five year streak going since I started keeping records.

I'm a Protestant and my services aren't until this evening, but I have lots of Catholic friends and their service is traditionally the early morning Mass. So, for once, I have no beef with Joe.

And for my friends who do not observe Ash Wednesday, no, you don't wash them off.

Nice try. I fully expect to judged by the same standards by which I judge others. Do I live a perfect Catholic life? Nope. Does my participation in the electoral and political process reflect my faith and values? Yep. And if they did otherwise, I would expect other people to question the sincerity of my faith.
