U.S. Sen. John McCain has picked up the endorsement of former actor and Sen. Fred Thompson while opponent J.D. Hayworth gets ready for an event with Maricopa County Attorney Andrew Thomas and State Sen. Russell Pearce.
Hayworth and McCain, seeking a fifth term, are battling in the Republican Senate primary this year.
Thompson — a former senator from Tennessee and actor on the “Law & Order” television show — announced his endorsement Wednesday. McCain and Thompson both ran for president in 2008.
“I’m for John McCain. I hope he gets re-elected. I’ll help him get re-elected if I can. It’s more important for me, and I believe for the country, to have McCain’s leadership and the respect that he brings to bear on an issue. When he takes the floor on a national security matter. When he takes the floor and leads the intellectual effort the for the surge. When, without his efforts, I don’t think we would have ever had a surge and therefore we would never have had a victory in Iraq,” Thompson said.
Hayworth, Thomas and Pearce will appear together Feb. 24 in Tempe. Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio also backs Hayworth over long-time foe McCain.

now you understand his role in the race. His role was to split the conservative vote so that McCain would win.
Disappointed also. But we’ve all known about Fred’s unexplainable love for John.
John is such a user. He made a clever move in selecting Sarah Palin, but it was self-serving. He thought her youth, enthusiasm and conservatism would counteract the perception of him as old and too liberal.
It did. He wouldn’t have done nearly so well without her, but when they lost, I think he decided she cost him the election. He did not stand up for her when his staff and even his wife and daughter made snide remarks.
And now, he’s using her again. He’s had the nerve to put her in an untenable position by asking for her support. She’s gonna suffer either way. She simply cannot turn on the man who chose her for VP. She’s not that kind of person and it would look bad.
I do not blame Sarah for supporting John but I blame him for using her once again.
I hope Hayworth doesn’t get discouraged and remembers how things can change. Remembers Massachusetts.
You should not be surprised...especially after Fred bailed in the 08 primary...He was not what people hoped he was.

If you knew anything about Fred, you knew there was a 100% chance he’d back McCain.

I did, too. I’m VERY disappointed.
Then I’m completely done with Thompson. He ran a half-hearted campaign for the presidency two years ago, and that almost did him in for me.
That’s it.

I agree. How can she turn down the man who nominated her to be the first female Republican nominee for Vice President, in the history of our country?
Fred just made me realize he wasn’t ready for prime time. What a huge disappointment.
So John McCain is calling in favors from cronies of yore, so what. He still has to be defeated in November.
We must focus on his defeat, not our defeatism.
