Reid Comes Out For Reconciliation on Public Option
National Review Online ^ | February 19, 2010 | Daniel Foster

Posted on 02/19/2010 1:37:47 PM PST by C19fan

Greg Sargent reports that Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has said that he would support holding a reconciliation vote on a public option.

Said Reid spokesman Rodell Mollineau in a written statement (emphasis Sargent's):

Senator Reid has always and continues to support the public option as a way to drive down costs and create competition. That is why he included the measure in his original health care proposal.

If a decision is made to use reconciliation to advance health care, Senator Reid will work with the White House, the House, and members of his caucus in an effort to craft a public option that can overcome procedural obstacles and secure enough votes.

But Sargent also relays the doubts of Senate leadership aides, who say they aren't sure if the Senate parliamentarian will allow the passage of a public option via reconciliation.

I knew last night, after watching Hannity, they were going to do this to try and shove this ObamaCare down Americans’ throats.

If they succeed, what political price do you think they’ll have to pay?

I can’t imagine the parlementarian would accept a the language that would be needed to construct a public insurance program as a budget item. If there already was a plan, they could probably get a change in eligibility through if they argued opening up the plan would bring in more revenue than it would cost.

But I also don’t think there are 50 votes for it in the Senate. They couldn’t get the public option through the committee where they have a majority vote rule and the democrats had the majority.

I think the real purpose of floating this is that every day there is another story about something they will pass by reconciliation — which means every day America is told that things pass by reconciliation.

They are desentizing the people and the media, so that when they actually try to pull the trigger, it won’t be like the “nuclear option”, it will seem like an ordinary occurance.

And if they can have the parlamentarian reject a few things, it will make it look even more “normal”, showing that the things that AREN’T rejected MUST be OK since the parlementarian rejected some things.

If the RATs do this, it’s a ‘Declaration of War’ on democratic rules by which other Congresses have enacted legislation.

Let the lawsuits begin to stop this monstrosity until it can be repealed.

Dirty Harry's bent on political suicide and wants others to follow him. We'll see how many takers there are.

I have a bad feeling in my gut about this.I think there just might be enough RAT scumbags who are willing to defy the wishes of Americans,in general, and their own constituents in particular, that they'll pull this off.

“Can a ruling by the parliamentarian be overturned by a majority vote?”

No, it requires 60 votes, but if they had 60 votes, they wouldn’t need reconciliation etc. However, it CAN be overturned by the Vice President, which apparently is exactly the plan here even though this has not happened since 1975. http://thehill.com/blogs/blog-briefing-room/news/81273-healthcare-reform-and-reconciliation-a-bad-mix-ex-parliamentarian-says

I thought the republicans had already killed this idea by showing they could stop it using endless amendments. Reconciliation has no limit on the number of amendments that may be offered, unless 60 members vote to stop any further amendments, and if the dems had 60 they wouldn't need reconciliation anyhow.

Isn’t there a Senate rule that requires at least one member of the minority party present for any votes, and doesn’t it require a supermajority of 70% of the Senate to change rules? If so, the Republicans could go counter-nuclear and stop this by not showing up for a vote.

Tyrants do not concern themselves with the will of the people!

If they pass this healthcare bill and Americans do nothing we are finished as a free people.

Not if he has an ounce of integrity. I wonder if that could be the plan. The Democrats write the bill, introduce it, then have the Senate Parliamentarian rule that that 90% of it is not germane to budget matters -- before it is voted on. Then the Democrats can to their base, shrug their shoulders, and say: "Hey, we tried." All without their members having to cast another vote for Obama Care.

It is another show to satisfy the delusion of their left wing lunatic supporters. If they can pass the healthcare bill through reconciliation they would have done so long time ago when they were in much better situation. If they could not do it back then they cannot do it now or tomorrow or for a generation.

Maybe, but they can’t stop the Republicans from offering as many amendments as they want to be voted on during reconciliation. And that’s what they better do for as long as it takes to stop this horrible bill.

They will pay big, my friend! Let the DEMS own whatever they get passed and BO signs!

BO’s meeting for all the “weak, let's get along Republicans” is nothing but a trap to blame them for the delay. Anyone with a brain knows BO will control the meeting completely. We also know that the DEMS are going to pass what they want anyway...without one R vote! So let them!!

And as far as I am concerned, ANY Republican who shows up to meet with BO on the 25th over the health care bill deserves to be voted out of office with EVERY DEM!
