Few colonial buildings remain in Caracas. Is Chavez changing that or just haphazardly seizing buildings?
Standing at the corner of one of Venezuelas most historic squares, the Francia building always looked a little incongruous among the Spanish colonial mansions.
But for many, this late art deco construction holds fond memories it housed Caracas largest gold market for more than half a century. Many came to buy engagement or wedding rings for their sweethearts, confirmation bracelets for their children or watches or trinkets for themselves.
That was until last week when the edifice caught the eye of President Hugo Chavez...
And this building? he asked the local mayor, pointing at La Francia. Its a building that has private jewelry businesses, the mayor replied. Expropriate it, ordered the president....
Within two days of the broadcast of his program, the presidents demands had been met and traders had evacuated almost the entire building afraid that their goods would be seized. There had been 91 gold and silver shops over nine floors.
People see the heritage laws as a way of undermining private property.
How do you find a solution to something that happened in seconds? said Freddy Chacon, a store owner who first worked in the building as a messenger boy in the 1960s. Youre relaxing at home and someone calls and says look at the television they expropriated your business.

This is called “theft.” Chavez es un ladrón. No more. No less.
Can you say Kelo? Not this drastic, but same result.
That link goes elsewhere. Try this:
Well, why doesn’t someone step up to the plate and take Chavez out ? What have they got to lose if there life is destroyed by the POS.
He had no plans for those property he has stolen at a whim, the plans come later if ever.
Same thing with Hitler, Mussolini, Mao, Lenin, Stalin, Castro, Ahamadinejad, Jung-Il, etc.
How long before this sick bastard is either overthrown or assassinated? How long will his countrymen put up with this s**t?
At least they TRIED with Hitler. Screwed him up a lot.
Someone has to be able to get close enough to assassinate chavez. It shouldn’t be that hard to take down that malignant thug in red with an IED attack or a sniper in a window..
