Homeland chief: Domestic extremism is top concern (1st Amendment about to be attacked?)

WASHINGTON (AP) - Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano says terrorists who are U.S. citizens or live in the country legally and plot against the U.S. are just as big of a concern as international terrorists.

She says that when she started as secretary a year ago, the focus was largely on international terrorists who want to harm U.S. interests. But in the past year, more of the violent extremism that has been seen overseas is showing up in the U.S.

She says officials need to drill down and analyze the factors that make a young person, raised in the U.S., migrate to extremist beliefs and actions.

Napolitano was speaking to governors who are in Washington for their annual conference.

I've got a bad feeling about this... When I read this short news item a tingle went down my spine, and not in a good way. The first thing that went through my mind was this could lead to infringements of freedom of speech, rallies, etc. Am I putting on my tin foil hat prematurely, or does anyone else feel suspicious of this?

A history of the left shows that once they get into power, one of their first moves is to crush the voice (and sometimes the lives) of the opposition. The problem for the American left is that power is diffused throughout society, we have a long tradition of individual freedom, and lots of people own guns, so they’ll have to tread carefully.

But in answer to your question - a healthy lack of trust when dealing with the left is a good survival skill.
