I have this debate every single year with my high school Government classes. Sometimes I give them the long version as can be found in the site given here. Sometimes I give them the doctrine I was taught to me by my friends in special forces (I was but a lowly straight leg infantry lieutenant and later a tank officer -- but I had some BAD A$$ED buddies!)

It's called "TRADE UP." If I have a rock or a knife, I can GET a handgun. If I have a handgun I can GET a rifle. If I have a rifle I can GET something BELT FED. Or a TANK or several of each. In such ways are armies equipped. Live off the enemy for food, weapons and other supplies.
