The Pentagon will lift a decades-old policy that prohibits women from serving aboard Navy submarines.
WASHINGTON -- The Pentagon has moved to lift a decades-old policy that prohibits women from serving aboard Navy submarines, part of a gradual reconsideration of women's roles in a military fighting two wars whose front lines can be anywhere.
At issue is the end of a policy that kept women from serving aboard the last type of ship off-limits to them. The thinking was that the close quarters aboard subs would make coed service difficult to manage.
Defense Secretary Robert Gates notified Congress in a letter signed Friday that the Navy intends to repeal the ban on women sailors on subs. Congress has 30 days to weigh in.

Wow....another bad idea..... go have junior born on board before the tour is over.
I’m sure they’ll be homosexuals also.
Not a good idea.
dumb, dumb and dumb
Gates & Mullen are trying to turn the Navy into a giant whorehouse. They are extreme PC whores, and both certifiably crazy.
No more extra socks! MM! SSN621
They already did this on Down Periscope. And the lady on that sub, she ended up getting promoted to Director of NCIS.
“Im sure theyll be homosexuals also.”
Unfortunately there already are. These degenerates will never be happy and won’t stop until everyone is forced to acknowledge that homosexuality is “normal and honorable.”
Warms. What are they?
This is stupid and does does not spell ‘national security’. Good grief! What is wrong with these people. Never mind; we all know what is wrong.
Arrrghhhh...you got me ;)
Robert Gates has been a lousy Sec of defense.
Like hot biscuits at the breakfast table. Mmm mmm mmm.
Unfreakin’ believable! This is one of the dumbest ideas yet.
I would think of all the worst things that happened to the past couple of generations of Americans is the instilling of the idea that everything, no matter how inherently or unalterably unfair, must be made to be fair, no matter what the costs.
I'm also going to go out on a limb and guess that no US sub has the extra room for a maternity ward and day care center either.
Those are the people who control politics from both sides, folks. Let ‘em do their thing, but don’t help ‘em with it. And survive. Most of the rest of you are going to lose your jobs. Realize that first. Avoid unnecessary personal expenses. Become more self-sufficient. Start a hobby of making something useful (not little pretties, “crafts,” etc.). ...something like steel castings, parts, tools, food, clothing, etc.
Just wait - the XO or someone will have to give up their cabin; the space will be needed for a Lactation Room. Can't you just see that written on the bulkhead in military stencil?
Maybe Big Sis can clarify the type of female expected to qualify for the service.
For those that don't know, hot bunking is one rack (bed) being shared. One works and the other sleeps... swap.
I can only hope she will overlap the "sleeping/working" part, For moral ya know :-)
Seriously,,, does she sleep with the crew or have a private room (that does not exist) like the Captain?
I agree it’s not a good idea. Perhaps they’ll just have an all female crew.
...what about the coxswain?
That was under consideration during the final year of George W. Bush's presidency. The Navy was considering an all-female crew for a Los Angeles-class attack boat. Maybe more than one, but an article linked here earlier today even identified the CO of the first all-female SSN.
The plan was to be implemented by 2009; I can only assume that it was postponed or the Navy reconsidered. You can bet that if they'd moved forward with that plan, it would've been in ALL the papers.
Since when does decades-old mean 'NEVER'?
There is also a joke about seamen somewhere in this story.
Another stupid idea from idiots. STS2/SS
One week it’s Corpse Men, the next week it’s Sea Men.
When will this insanity end?????? LOL
I wonder how many bubbleheads were involved in this decision making process. My guess is none.
This is an absolute disaster in the making. It will do NOTHING to improve the war fighting readiness of US submarines, and statistics in fact PROVE that the opposite has occurred on all other co-ed sea going platforms. What then is the point? This is obviously PC BS!!
One guaranteed result of this is that there will be an exodus of highly qualified extremely competent submariners from the force. Submarine life is incredibly stressful as it is. This decision will force many good men to simply leave, rather than tolerate such an increase in hostility and antagonism. It’s a cost/benefit calculation....and many will just come to the conclusion that it’s simply not worth it anymore.
BTW...the idea that we can correct human nature and biology by fiat is a purely socialistic and insane one.
I guess all the jokes about shower techs being women will have to stop.
If that's true, the Ruskies and Chicoms had better hope they don't start trouble during the wrong time of the month.
Maybe the idea came from here.
When I was in the sandbox I can recall becoming so sensitive to females, due to a lack of sexual activity, that I could walk past various sleeping quarters (aka hooches) and tell there was a female inside just from my raw senses. I could literally smell them and I don’t mean their perfume. Human sexual desire doesn’t go away in a warzone or in a pressurized can under the ocean. Bad idea...
So, does this mean women on subs will “go down”?
I can’t believe I said that!
Oh....I said Bubbleheads....not Bobbing head...
If it was that strong for you in open air, imagine what recycled air in an enclosed space will do. Wow
The women were just as bad as the guys when it came to unauthorized sexual activity. Girls who you would never think would cheat on their husband or boyfriend back home were getting their fair share...
They called it “bunker love.”
Yea, this is a bad idea.
In Saudi we had to run along the flightline, we had to pass to female heads. We smelled them too and it was not perfume.
What does Gates and Mullen’s have against the Navy?
Congratulations, America, on your "historic" election.
Just what do the wives and girlfriends of the submariners think about this policy change?
So let’s see— take an Ohio class SSBN (submersible ship ballistic nuclear) a missile boat. These have 24 missile tubes each with a missile tipped with 8 multiple reentry warheads (MRV) each one of which is 475 kilotons, or 24 times the tonnage of Fat Man (Hiroshima atomic bomb). So that’s 8x24x475kilotons=91,200 kilotons of firepower. You put into this submarine a mixture of single, married and otherwise attached mixed crew of both sexes and you place them in 400 plus feet underwater. Mix generously during 3 month patrol as part of our nuclear deterrent triad (bombers, land missiles, subs). This is NOT a carrier, it is so sophisticated that any ONE little thing can go wrong and the vessel is LOST, immediately. The Israelis abandoned any attempt of this sort of thing, and also of an all female crew, even switched out (Blue and Gold crews both all female). The discipline effects of this have been well documented. Anyone within the submarine community (who were not asked, I assure you) will tell you HOW BAD THIS IS. We should all write to the appropriate congress people. This is NO place for social experimentation. It was Patsy Schroeder that started all this, and it has weakened our readiness— period. That is all.. (family of submariners from before WWII) This is simply insane. An entire crew with all the females with synchronized PMS?!! No other country does this, except maybe New Zealand. Incredible. And what are our enemies doing? Not this you can be sure.
