A St. Petersburg, Florida man reportedly used his gun to stop a home invader.
Police say that a burglar tried to break in through the rear window of a home on the 1900 block of Seminole Blvd at about 9:40 AM. The homeowner is said to have noticed the home invasion attempt and fired several shots from his 9mm pistol, which sent the criminal fleeing. Moments later, a local hospital called police to report that 30 year old Michael Patterson had arrived with multiple gunshot wounds to his hand and upper body, according to police. Patterson has reportedly been charged with residential burglary, and police say that the homeowner acted within his rights and will not face any charges.
Home invading criminals are a deadly and terrible threat for every man, woman, and child in the residence. Victims of home invasion all too often suffer torture, rape, kidnapping, and murder at the hands of criminals who care more about a few dollars than human life.
The good news is that gun owners like this man can, and do, stop such criminals every day. Gun ownership saved this homeowner, and led to a suspect being swiftly apprehended and charged by police.

I like a happy ending.
Anyone who tries to enter your home while you are in it needs kiling.
Several shots to the upper torso and the guy is still walking? This homeowner needs a .45
Good shooting, Citizen. Civilization thanks you.
Nah, just HP instead of FMJ.
I like em too. Unfortunately some jive lawyer will make an appeal to the judge with big crocodile tears on how his client has been punished enough with being shot and will need mental and physical therapy, on the taxpayers dime of course for the rest of his life... ad nauseum.
And the judge, who is a lawyer too, will grant it. And Patterson there will be free to continue to victimize society. Only this time, he will probably go after an old lady and HE will bring the gun to burglary.
Seen it too many times....
It’s the FL learning curve for crooks.
“Break in, get shot. Not good.”
Maybe the gun owner is smart enough to make his own caliber decision between power, capacity, and recoil. He's alive so I'm inclined to trust his judgment. The goal is not to kill the threat, it's to stop the threat.
True, at least when you are called to give a statement to police. However, as the next homeowner on this criminal's list (potentially), I wouldn't mind if this gentleman went shopping for more stopping power or put in a little more range time so that multiple shots to the upper torso would have the desired effect (if there is a next time).
Don't come to my house. My goal is to kill the threat.
I look forward to the caliber battle on this thread:
"9mm is too puny!"
"Oh no it's not!"
Full disclosure: I'm a .40 cal guy myself. I am loaded for snake, as my house is very small and any confrontation is likely to be within ten feet. Also, I don't want to kill my neighbor.
Naw, the guy needs to learn aiming and proper gun control. He fired too many times.
00 buckshot works well too. No caliber battle from me; end result is what counts.
Check your state and local laws....and get a damn good attorney.
“Several shots to the upper torso and the guy is still walking? This homeowner needs a .45”
The .45 is my gun of choice too, but I am thinking of switching to the Taurus Judge for such situations.
If you really want to be sure ...
Try a .45-70!
“Try a .45-70! “
Too long range
Don't need to. About a year or two ago a neighbor did just that, shot the man dead, ran outside and shot the rear window out of the car as the accomplice raced away. The police caught the accomplice, and a third person.
Im not positive, but I think the only charges were capital murder against the person in the car.
We know what to do with criminals in some of our western states.
The only way to be SURE the threat is stopped is to kill it.
Good thinking on your part. Here in Colorado we can use deadly force if we feel threatened in our homes.
I’m not sure how my neighbor was able to run out of the house and shoot out the rear window of the retreating car and not get charged with something.
I’m thinking that since our county (Douglas) is very conservative, and we live 20 miles from the sheriffs office, and the action lead to a speedy resolution of the crime (less than 6 hours) the DA just looked the other way. Good thing for us law abiding.
