Bernanke should have answered Ron Paul’s ‘bizarre’ questions

In a post yesterday, I asked readers to help me figure out if Ron Paul’s accusastions that the Federal Reserve loaned money to Saddam Hussein and paid off the Watergate burglars were accurate in any way. Commenter sailingaway pointed me to this article from The Hill, which then directed me to a few other sources. Turns out that Ron “Get Off My Land” Paul might be on to something.

“George Washington” writing at Zero Hedge has this to say:

[I]n 2008, the University of Texas published a book by Robert D. Auerbach – an economist with the U.S. House of Representatives Financial Services Committee for eleven years, assisting with oversight of the Federal Reserve, and subsequently Professor of Public Affairs at the Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs at the University of Texas at Austin – which seems to support Paul’s questions.

In Deception and Abuse at the Fed, Auerbach claims:

Major instances of Fed mismanagement and abuse of power that were exposed by [House Financial Services Committee Chairman/Ranking Member Henry] Gonzalez, including:

Blocking Congress and the public from holding powerful Fed officials accountable by falsely declaring—for 17 years—it had no transcripts of its meetings; Manipulating the stock and bond markets in 1994 under cover of a preemptive strike against inflation; Allowing $5.5 billion to be sent to Saddam Hussein from a small Atlanta branch of a foreign bank—the result of faulty bank examination practices by the Fed; Stonewalling Congressional investigations and misleading the Washington Post about the $6,300 found on the Watergate burglars.

As huge as the government has become and with so much pork and redundancy, it probably did happen.

All Paul did was ask some questions, questions that have been raised by many mainstream historians and journalists. Why do people have a problem with that? Isn’t Bernanke supposed to be some sort of “expert” on history. Perhaps the Paul critics on this issue need to reexamine their view that Bernanke is some sort of sacred cow.

The onus is on the accuser to produce evidence of wrongdoing. Let’s see if Paul does so. His record so far is one of fomenting wild stories but never following up.

Or is the seriousness of the charge enough? I know that’s enough for liberals; but not for me, and hopefully not for you.

Thank you, and I hope you don't get attacked by Shep the sheep and his flock of sheeple freepers.

Nothin' wrong with questions, unless your a sheep, sheep don't like questions for some reason.

You know, sometimes I think the bad guys are not a lot worse than the sheep who baa baa baa at the good folks who ask questions, do you know what I mean?

He was merely asking questions about charges that have been made by mainstream journalists and historians over the last three decades. If that does not meet your standard, no other congressman can measure up either.

You noticed too huh?

Watch for the pro-big gov members to ask, "What ever could you possibly mean?"

One just recently asked me for evidence of corruption involving "government unions"...lol

Private sector unions corrupt and bad. Government unions honest and good.

You're surrounded by those on the government payroll and those benefiting from big gov.

Any time Ron Paul is mentioned here, the anti-paulbots come out in droves.

I have issues with some of his positions myself, but he's not the raving lunatic some would make him out to be.

Paul asks about 4K and 5 billion dollars missing. Waxman last year asked about 12 billion. Still no answer.

Hey but Paul is a kook and Waxman is a democrat so who cares about all this money.

We are a rich country. We can afford this and all the billions of dollars being lost and stolen from us everyday.

Just work harder and longer and let the Gov tax the F out of us to pay for it.
