Heads up!! Here it comes!!
Here what comes?
Geology experts needed to weigh in...
Head for zee hillz!
Seriously though. When will we know if it produced a tsunami that the west coast needs to worry about?
7.0 is an attention-getter.
Sparky that Manbearpig he don’t anything drive South Park kids crazy
Hope our military folks on Okinawa are OK - also all the other folks who live there

I bet money it won’t produce a significant tsunami.
Seems like it takes at least several points over a 7 to do that.

Tsunami along the Cali. Oregon Alaska Washington coast.
To: U.S. West Coast, Alaska, and British Columbia coastal regions
From: NOAA/NWS/West Coast and Alaska Tsunami Warning Center
Subject: Tsunami Information Statement #1 issued 02/26/2010 at 12:45PM PST
A strong earthquake has occurred, but a tsunami IS NOT expected along the California, Oregon, Washington, British Columbia, or Alaska coast. NO tsunami warning, watch or advisory is in effect for these areas.
Based on the earthquake magnitude and historic tsunami records, a damaging tsunami IS NOT expected along the California, Oregon, Washington, British Columbia, and Alaska coasts. At coastal locations which have experienced strong ground shaking, local tsunamis are possible due to underwater landslides.
I hope it didn’t cause too much damage or hurt too many people. Some of my best days in the Army were on Okinawa. When I was stationed a little further north on Okino Erabu Shima small quakes were a common occurrence.
Thats a big one. If that doesn’t produce a tsunami they need to reasses their theories.
Shaken awake in the dark....hopefully they are aware of Tsunami warnings.
I spent 18 months there myself in 67&68. Many quake tremors. The tiny island is actually the top of a mountain that rises up from the floor of the South China Sea.
I looked at the map and Tokyo, Shanghai, Taipei and N. Philippines looked susceptible but the early tsunami warnings seem pretty mild
Aahhh, I didn’t realize it was in the ocean. Thanks.
Are you ok?
Its a lovely morning here on the SW coast of Taiwan. No rise in tides or unusual wave action here.
Quick! Is this another thing we can blame Global Warming on?
All tsunami threats have been lifted. It’s Japanese...but trust me. :)
It's not only the magnitude; it's the type of earthquake with the thrust-fault scenario usually being the most likely to produce a tsunami.
The tsunami generating process is more complicated than a sudden push against the column of ocean water. The earthquake's magnitude and depth, water depth in the region of tsunami generation, the amount of vertical motion of the sea floor, the velocity of such motion, whether there is coincident slumping of sediments and the efficiency with which energy is transferred from the earth's crust to ocean water are all part of the generation mechanism. What Causes Tsunamis?
Prayers for all involved!!
I lived in the village of Ameiku when I was 11. It was perched high on a cliff overlooking the ocean. I don't think we lived more than 50 yards from the drop-off.
Glad I'm not living there now.
Mine too, although I was only an Army Brat 1st Class. '63 to '66. One of the best darn places an adventurous kid could hope to live.
Look at what the difference will be in a 7.0 in Japan vs a 7.0 in Haiti. A county that takes responsibility for themselves may or may not need help but won’t be the disaster that a resolutely corrupt government was.
I pray for the victims.
Been here for over 30 years and this one rattled bery bery hard for almost a minute. The last 10 secs in shifted left to right. Just a bunch of CD’s on the floor. Can’t believe my pooch slept right thru it.
Now 8.8 hits CHile.....What’s up?
ring of fire is waking up
Thanks...Had forgotten about the “ring of fire”...In that case will be expecting more.
