Sound to big to be real? Not in Chile! They get some real stem-winders there.
These are subduction earthquakes.
Thanks for that.
yes..no tsunami warning for CA, OR, or WA however
Does this mean there will be a second donation bucket at the store?
Man, heard 8.5 and I thought I was hearing things...
OMG, prayers for the people affected. This is massive.
We Are The World Part 3
That looks about 50 miles from Santiago? Guessing here.
the USGS site is confirming initial reports now
http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/recenteqsww/Quakes/at00725245.html Magnitude 8.5 - BIO-BIO, CHILE
2010 February 27 06:34:13 UTC
depth (km) 55.0
location: BIO-BIO, CHILE
197 miles from Santiago. ... and downgraded a little bit to an 8.3.
339 km (210 miles) SSW (211°) from SANTIAGO, Chile
Wow. We’ve had 3 recent earthquakes. Haiti, Japan, and now Chili.
ping this first
8.3 is hard to fathom.
SANTIAGO, Chile (Reuters) - A massive magnitude-8.3 earthquake struck near Concepcion, Chile early on Saturday, USGS reported, shaking buildings and causing blackouts in parts of the capital of Santiago.
A Reuters witness reported shaking buildings and loss of electricity in Santiago.
Looks like it centered close to Concepcion
11th largest commune in the country, with a population of 212,003
Holy crap. That’s huge.
Any live links to Chilean newspapers? I can’t get any to load.
Damn! What in the last 100 years was ever near that magnitude?
Yep. There won’t be anything left when ours hits.
the city of Concepcion in Chile. The United States Geological Survey said the earthquake struck at 0634 GMT on Saturday at a depth of 55km (34.2 miles). Concepcion is the second largest city in the country, about 450km south of Santiago. The US government said a tsunami warning has been issued for Chile, Peru and Ecuador.
Yikes. Prayers for safety.
Central CA a little shaky right on the heels of this one.
ABC TV just reported 8.5 too
Thank the Lord it was shaking, not collapsing buildings.
I ponder the effect on Nino/Nina.
Looks like Concepcion, Chile will be hardest hit. I just tried to call up their university’s website, but it is down.
The 1964 Anchorage earthquake
That is SCARY. Prayers up for everyone down there.
AND...if you check out the seismocorders for Mt. Hood, Mt. Baker and Crater Lake, they felt it even harder than Rainier did!
The Anchorage earthquake was bigger at 9.2. 8.3 is still a massive quake.
What do you mean?
That’s a big one. Prayers up.
Now, were trying to tune a HF radio to see if we can hear any live reports from ham operators in the region. Lots of amateur radio operators down there, but unfortunately conditions are not good right now from our west coast spot.
Whole lotta shakin goin on!
