Immigration: big government is no answer
NY Post ^ | February 26, 2010 | LINDA CHAVEZ

Immigration-reform legislation is probably dead this year. That no doubt pleases some conservatives -- but the issue isn't going away. If conservatives hope to become the dominant force in American politics, we need to figure out a way to resolve the problem without alienating the country's fastest-growing demographic, Hispanics.

I delivered that message last week to some 10,000 conservatives gathered at the annual Conservative Political Action Committee meeting in Washington. The message seemed to resonate among many in the audience -- a minority to be sure, but a fairly large one.

I wasn't surprised. Conservatives are not monolithic in their views on immigration policy, even if the media sometimes act as if anyone who favors reform is a liberal -- or, in the increasingly popular buzzword, a progressive. To the contrary, I'd argue that the real "progressives" in this debate are the restrictionists who offer nothing but Big Government/Big Brother solutions to the problem -- and those who favor market-based legal immigration are the true conservatives.

Hispanics are the fastest growing demographic because they are illegally invading our country. Linda Chavez stopped being an American conservative a while back when she thought it was more important to associate herself with the heritage associated with her last name than be an American. To hell with her.

What would happen if Americans decided to migrate to Mexico en masse? We’d be shot on sight.

Anyone who supports shamnesty cannot be called a conservative.

Put a 50% tax on money being sent from the US to Mexico and see how fast illegal immigration stops.

The US is suffering from in excess of 10% unemployment, our cities are going bankrupt, and our hospitals are sinking. Get rid of illegal immigration and watch that clear up.

Over the past 20 years billions, no trillions, have been leached out of this country and sent to Mexico. In prior days, most of that money stayed here and recirculated, but because we now pay for education, food, medical care, more money has been available to ship offshore. Think about it.

Once again the true impetus behind "immigration reform" is revealed. It's about hispanics and giving them things (money).

It's about an eventual degradation of our culture till it looks like what they left behind because, in reality, that's what they want - a Mexico in the U.S. with the wealth that living in the U.S. comes with.

Exactly. If we get rid of illegals their ranks will not be growing so fast.

Before giving her advise on another Amnesty, Linda Chavez should be required to first answer for the last (1986) Amnesty?

Yes, Chavez was in the Reagan administration, when they claimed that that Amnesty would "resolve the problem" of illegals.

So we legalized 2.5 million of those invaders. What did it accomplish? Twenty years later, estimates of the new illegal problem were put at 12-20 million.

So Linda, if your last Amnesty for illegals brought us 5-8 times more illegals, why will this "son of Amnesty" have a different result?

Or do you see the prospects of a similar result - 60 million plus new illegals - as inconsequential or even positive?

And then they promised to “crack down” and vigorously enforce our immigration laws. That did not happen.

When Bush tried to step up enforcement you had screaming and hand wringing and sob stories.....

No amnesty until the Feds prove that they can and will enforce our immigration laws.

***without alienating the country's fastest-growing demographic, Hispanics.***

This fastest growing demographic is illegal and can't vote anyway (not legally).

And what makes her think all “Hispanics” are a monolith and want amnesty for illegals? I bet the ones that came legally are just as fed up with the illegals as the rest of us.

I think it’s easier than that. Enforce the law, dry up the jobs and they will go home on their own.

Yes an round em up too. Let them know not to try again! Bring the 82nd back from Haiti and put em on the border. It would create about 10 million jobs immediatly. For Americans. We must get the Government back in American hands quick!

The United States' problem with Mexico is bigger than illegal immigration which is a symptom. I have been reading that in the future the middle east will not be our biggest foreign policy problem, Mexico will be. We need to understand this and start getting serious about our current and future policy relationship with the Mexican government and the Mexican people.
The U.S. is a relief valve for the political and economic problems in Mexico. Chavez usually only discusses illegal immigration from Mexico but not the causes of this mass migration. She speaks about how American citizens should adapt to the growing Mexican demographic but I have never read or heard her discuss how the illegal immigration problem can be solved and how this demographic can assimilate. I believe she is being ethnocentric in her analysis.
