Climate change should not be a partisan issue
Published: 05:58 p.m., Wednesday, February 24, 2010
The saddest thing about the global warming debate going on right now ("Not buying talk of global warming," Letters, Feb. 23) is that is has immediately been turned into a partisan issue by angry right wingers who refuse to believe that anybody over on the left (or anyone but themselves, for that matter) has a shred of intelligence -- regardless of the fact that science is not partisan.
The GOP (to which the bulk of global warming nay-sayers belong, I would dare guess), should change its name to Great Ostrich Party for ignoring a phenomenon taking place right before their eyes. All these omnisicient guardians of truth need to do is look out the window, or at a newspaper. The polar caps are melting at a rate faster than ever witnessed or predicted previously, temperatures have been rising for years, weather patterns have been going steadily out of whack for years, seasons have been subject to "unseasonable"-like weather for decades now, and it doesn't take a genius to see that something is changing on old Mother Earth.
They don't seem to comprehend the inescapabe fact that melting ice caps means catastrophic flooding of coastal lands. Now, whether these cycles occur naturally or not isn't even really important. Knowing what the eventual outcome must be, wouldn't it be wiser for us humans to make an attempt to ward off possible catastrophe? It seems like common sense to me!
But, no, it has to be a massive left-wing socialist conspiracy to force us to cut back on greenhouse emissions and place restrictions on our industry, because obviously the whole left wing gets instructions from Beijing or fairyland or whatever ... right?
Come on. Al Gore didn't create global warming, and God doesn't control the weather, and if the Ostrich People don't start getting their heads out of the ground, they may just wake up one morning underwater.
Nope - Barry Hatrick does. (Will the idiot give up HIS car, air conditioning or gas heater to save Mother Earth? The magic 8-ball says, 'Don't count on it'.)

“regardless of the fact that science is not partisan”
Oh Barry! You got it exactly wrong! Have YOU had your head in the ground? Where have you been?
The “science” IS partisan. That’s the problem!

THE ACQUITTAL OF CARBON DIOXIDE
by Jeffrey A. Glassman, PhD
"Carbon dioxide in the atmosphere [historically] is the product of oceanic respiration due to the well-known but under-appreciated solubility pump. Carbon dioxide rises out of warm ocean waters where it is added to the atmosphere. There it is mixed with residual and accidental CO2, and circulated, to be absorbed into the sink of the cold ocean waters. Next the thermohaline circulation carries the CO2-rich sea water deep into the ocean. A millennium later it appears at the surface in warm waters, saturated by lower pressure and higher temperature, to be exhausted back into the atmosphere. Throughout the past 420 millennia, comprising four interglacial periods, the Vostok record of atmospheric carbon dioxide concentration is imprinted with, and fully characterized by, the physics of the solubility of CO2 in water, along with the lag in the deep ocean circulation.
Notwithstanding that carbon dioxide is a greenhouse gas, atmospheric carbon dioxide has neither caused nor amplified global temperature increases. Increased carbon dioxide has been an effect of global warming, not a cause. Technically, carbon dioxide is a lagging proxy for ocean temperatures. When global temperature, and along with it, ocean temperature rises, the physics of solubility causes atmospheric CO2 to increase.
If increases in carbon dioxide, or any other greenhouse gas, could have in turn raised global temperatures, the positive feedback would have been catastrophic. While the conditions for such a catastrophe were present in the Vostok record from natural causes, the runaway event did not occur. Carbon dioxide does not accumulate in the atmosphere."
The graph above represents temperature and CO2 levels over the past 400,000 years. It is the same exact data Al Gore and the rest of the man-made global warmers refer to. The blue line is temps, the red, CO2 levels. The deep valleys represent 4 separate glaciation/ice-age periods, approximately 100,000 years apart. Look carefully at the historical relationship between temps and CO2 levels (the present is on the right hand side of the graph) and keep in mind that Gore claims this data is the 'proof' that CO2 has warmed the earth in the past. But does this data indeed show this? Nope. In fact, rising CO2 levels all throughout this 400,000-year period actually *followed* temperature increases, lagging behind by an average of 800 years! So it couldn't have been CO2 that got Earth out of these past glaciations. Yet Gore continually and dishonestly uses this same data as "evidence" of a *positive* historical correlation between CO2 and temps. Furthermore, and importantly, the subsequent CO2 level increases (due to dissolved CO2 being released from warming oceans) never did lead to additional warming, the so-called "run-away greenhouse effect" that Al Gore and company continue warning us about. In short, there is little if any evidence that CO2 had ever led to any significant global warming when the levels were within 10-15 times of what they are today. -etl
"The above chart shows the range of global temperature through the last 500 million years. There is no statistical correlation between the level of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere through the last 500 million years and the temperature record in this interval. In fact, one of the highest levels of carbon dioxide concentration occurred during a major ice age that occurred about 450 million years ago [Myr]. Carbon dioxide concentrations at that time were about 15 times higher than at present." [also see 180 million years ago, same thing happened]:
So, greenhouse [effect] is all about carbon dioxide, right?
Wrong. The most important players on the greenhouse stage are water vapor and clouds [clouds of course aren't gas, but high level ones do act to trap heat from escaping, while low-lying cumulus clouds tend to reflect sunlight and thereby help cool the planet -etl]. Carbon dioxide has been increased to about 0.038% of the atmosphere (possibly from about 0.028% pre-Industrial Revolution) while water in its various forms ranges from 0% to 4% of the atmosphere and its properties vary by what form it is in and even at what altitude it is found in the atmosphere.
In simple terms the bulk of Earth's greenhouse effect is due to water vapor by virtue of its abundance. Water accounts for about 90% of the Earth's greenhouse effect -- perhaps 70% is due to water vapor and about 20% due to clouds (mostly water droplets), some estimates put water as high as 95% of Earth's total tropospheric greenhouse effect (e.g., Freidenreich and Ramaswamy, 'Solar Radiation Absorption by Carbon Dioxide, Overlap with Water, and a Parameterization for General Circulation Models,' Journal of Geophysical Research 98 (1993):7255-7264).
The remaining portion comes from carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide, methane, ozone and miscellaneous other 'minor greenhouse gases.' As an example of the relative importance of water it should be noted that changes in the relative humidity on the order of 1.3-4% are equivalent to the effect of doubling CO2.
Water Vapor Rules the Greenhouse System
Water vapor constitutes Earth's most significant greenhouse gas, accounting for about 95% of Earth's greenhouse effect (4). Interestingly, many 'facts and figures' regarding global warming completely ignore the powerful effects of water vapor in the greenhouse system, carelessly (perhaps, deliberately) overstating human impacts as much as 20-fold.
Water vapor is 99.999% of natural origin. Other atmospheric greenhouse gases, carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), nitrous oxide (N2O), and miscellaneous other gases (CFC's, etc.), are also mostly of natural origin (except for the latter, which is mostly anthropogenic).
Human activities contribute slightly to greenhouse gas concentrations through farming, manufacturing, power generation, and transportation. However, these emissions are so dwarfed in comparison to emissions from natural sources we can do nothing about, that even the most costly efforts to limit human emissions would have a very small-- perhaps undetectable-- effect on global climate.
Water Vapor Confirmed As Major Player In Climate Change
ScienceDaily (Nov. 18, 2008) Water vapor is known to be Earth's most abundant greenhouse gas, but the extent of its contribution to global warming has been debated. Using recent NASA satellite data, researchers have estimated more precisely than ever the heat-trapping effect of water in the air, validating the role of the gas as a critical component of climate change.
Barry God Complex Hatrick
Is he a real person? He is so out of it, I am embarrassed for him. Why do libs love to say “But noooo”, so much? They use the same patterns in arguments. Their arguments are always the same. Somebody is crazy, or stupid. Lots of stupid these days. It seems to have replaced racist as the favorite. To be a liberal, is to be so superior intellectually. Guys like, the above, drink some very tasty Kool-Aid. Makes them feel so much better than the petty ankle biters, they imagine they are surrounded by.
It would be more accurate to say that when science becomes partisan, as this issue very obviously has, it stops being science.

Too bad this clown would know common or uncommon sense if it bit him on the rear.
the earth has a cold
Yes it’s partisan.
When mixed with politics, all science gets washed away.
Your post needs a barf alert.
Well .. if people would just watch a video called, “The Priviledged Planet”, they would see that the Sun’s relation to the Earth is the element which governs the temperature of Earth.
God’s plan for our planet was not a “happen so”, “maybe so”, it was on purpose.
As the orbit of the Sun and Earth change from close (where it was until 1998), to farther away, as is happening now - that’s what causes the temperature of the Earth to fluxuate.
Watch the video - it will amaze you. God set this planet in a perfect position within the heavens. If we were just a few degrees out of our orbit, we would be as frozen as Mars, or a few degrees the other way and we would be burned up. I think I’ve watched the video 3-4 times - and everytime I’m just amazed at how God coordinated our placement in the universe.
Our orbit also allows the earth to have the BEST VIEW of the universe.
I think I first saw the video on Discovery or the History Channel. I bought my copy on Amazon. If you have children, this is a great learning tool. The two gentlemen who made the video are both scientists, so it’s scientically based; not some pipedream. My nephew borrowed my video to show at his children’s school - and all the kids all loved it.
Wrong. Science has always been partisan. Even Galileo wanted to name the moons of Jupiter he had just discovered after his Medici patrons to further gain their favor.
The scientific method, peer reviews, complete release of all data and methods, and allowing other scientists to replicate the experiments are there because too often scientists fall for the siren's call of obeying their funders. Essentially it is a case of living in a glass house so everyone can see what each other is doing to prevent cheating. The global warmists moved into the basement to keep from being observed, but still tried to claim the scientific validity that goes with full transparency.
Orbital changes aren't on decades long cycles. They vary over tens and hundreds of thousands of years. A much shorter, and not completely understood, cycle is the magnetic field of the sun and the associated sunspot cycle.
Barry should use his head for something besides a Hatrick.
Well .. I’m not a scientist .. but the video is clear; obviously you have not seen it.
Every part of his list of things gone wrong has an analogue in history and probably a calamitist to shout alarums; someone needs to outlaw sandwich boards.
I am a scientist. The writer of this screed (Barry Hatrick) is an anti-intellectual fool.
One video is not “science.” He’s right. Orbital variance, while it does exist, does not happen in terms of decades or even centuries (it’s simple physics; the shear alone would devastate the Earth if it were bouncing in and out on its orbital path that quickly).
It’s absolutely amazing that the major issue of our time has become the supposed damaging over-temperature of the world when not one soul knows what that temperature should be.
There is no consensus on the point to which the marksmen are aiming, yet they are all sure we haven’t hit it yet but if we just take their advice we will save the universe.
And then what???
Millions of crusaders without a cause?
Won’t that be fun.
