White team’s ‘stepping’ win sparks uproar
AP/Boston Herald ^ | Saturday, February 27, 2010 | AP

Posted on 02/27/2010 8:39:14 AM PST by fishhound

ATLANTA - A white Arkansas team’s win in a national “stepping” contest has sparked a fierce controversy over whether the integration of a once exclusively black college tradition constitutes a form of cultural theft.

“What has happened is black youth culture, what people would call hip-hop, sort of made black culture . . . appealing to all kinds of people,” said Walter Kimbrough of historically black Philander Smith College in Little Rock, Ark., an expert on black Greek life.

The uproar began when the University of Arkansas’ all-white Zeta Tau Alpha team beat out five teams in last weekend’s Sprite Step Off national finals. A YouTube video of their performance, inspired by the movie “The Matrix,” drew hundreds of comments, debating whether whites should have been let in and whether judges wowed by the unlikely competitors inflated their scores.

On Thursday, sponsor Coca-Cola announced “scoring discrepancies” and said the runner-up from Indiana University, whose members are black, would share first place and get the same $100,000 in scholarships the Zeta Tau Alphas won. It was unclear what the discrepancies were. Coca-Cola would not elaborate.

There is no hope when it comes to black attitudes. What’s with the grudge that won’t moderate. Isn’t there ever gonna be a time when they say “the past has passed” or “let’s laugh about things?” Where are the adults?

Ooh, I'm gonna try this one out the next time I hear some breathless media report about a racial milestone being crossed - 'the first black/brown/female' etc...

Why are some blacks upset about this? If a cultural touchstone of theirs becomes more popular, isn’t this celebrating diversity?

I remember there was some controversy about a black college with white football players. I think it was Grambling, historically black, where a white quarterback created waves just by being a white quarterback for an historically black college team. And the controversy was stirred by blacks, not by whites.

Of course, if a black quarterback plays for Ole Miss or some other college that used to be segregated, that’s ok, that’s just “progress” and all that.

To insure fairness in the future perhaps we should segregate whites to another college. Oh, right we tried that.

Yeah, Heaven forbid blacks get upstaged or actually have to compete on purely equal footing. Racist bastards.

Who knew what color they were before they showed up? Who were the judges? If had been a ballet competition, won by blacks for superior athletic performance of dance, would there even be any "debating" about having allowed them in?

Racism is alive and well- it's just not where it used to be!

"As judges of this competition, we want to say how sorry we are that some of the contestants were born black. We understand that the playing field is not level for them, and that they lack the basic skills with which to participate in a "stepping" contest. Therefore, strictly out of pity, we have decided to award them first place."

Golf was invented in Scotland and was a 'white' game for quite some time. Funny, it was seen as a sign of progress when Tiger Woods came to dominate the game. But let a white team win in what used to be a black activity and it is to be mourned.

What a bunch of bigots.

Exactly right. This shows the entire absurdity of “special” awards for “achievement” by race. A winner is a winner, an award is an award. To in any way taint it with who “should be allowed” to win is beyond stoooopid.

So, the Daughters of the American Revolution refused to let Marian Anderson sing at their convention in the 1930's and Eleanor Roosevelt became a civil rights hero by having her sing at some big event. This event is taught in the history books.

Fast forward to 2010 and people are arguing that white performers should be banned from an historically black event. Will this be taught in future history books?

I think it's become time to repeal all of the affirmative action laws. They are rotten and stink.

Dicrimination to the first degree, because they are all white and all female. Coca-cola should be ashamed of themselves.

I guess we should take back all the awards Whitney Houston has won, because she is not white, nor male?

I think Coca-Cola decided it would be a lot cheaper to pay the $100,000 now rather than have Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton arrive on the scene and give them lots of negative publicity in the mainstream media.

The "cultural theft" argument is new to me. I guess it could lead to only blacks being able to play college backetball, only blacks and Pacific Islanders playing college football, only Hispanics and Asians playing college baseball, only Scots playing golf, and only German-Americans being allowed to drink beer.

I wouldn’t walk across the street to see that.

It doesn't appeal much to me, either,
But the kids and the audience all seem to be enjoying it,
and it's obvious that such a coordinated performance requires a lot of practice and rehearsal.
So all-in-all, I'm happy to see them engaged in a positive and constructive event like this.
It's far, far better than some other ways they might be spending their free time.

The solution is very simple. Henceforth all “performers” shall wear blackface so they are indistinguishable. Everybody, including all light-skinned negroes, will have to be a very dark shade of black. That way the judges can evaluate strictly on merit and not be influenced by skin color.
